I am consecrated to Mary. Is it alright/ appropriate to also become a spiritual child of Saint Padre Pio?

Can you tell me what consecrated to Mary means? I’m still a new Catholic and I hear this, but don’t know what it means. Thank you.

I don’t see any problem with it. Mary doesn’t mind sharing, and a Consecration to Mary is not like taking vows to an order where you’re expected to join only one.

I know I asked the same question about a consecration to Holy Angels after being consecrated to Mary, and was told it was no problem doing both.

People go through a special prayer program where they consecrate themselves to Mary. They usually use either a 33-day program based either on St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary” or on the more contemporary book “33 Days to Morning Glory”, or else there is a shorter 9-day consecration you can do to Mary as the Immaculata that is based on the writings of St. Maximilian Kolbe. You spend time praying and meditating on how to be closer to Mary and in doing so, be closer to Jesus.

Once you finish your consecration, you’re offering yourself and your actions and any indulgences you earn, etc. to Mary every day so she can take them to Jesus or apply them as He sees fit. You are also supposed to renew your consecration each year by going through the prayer program again.

It’s an optional devotion to Mary and no one is required to do it. But it’s a pretty popular devotion.

so is it about being able to offer indulgences? Or a deeper devotion to Mary? Consecration is the word I don’t understand.

It’s about a deeper devotion to Mary. Many people who do it aren’t all that interested in earning indulgences.
I just note it because the consecration prayers often include a promise that you will offer yourself, all your indulgences, and your daily acts, and other merits, etc. to Mary to apply on behalf of Jesus.

Edited to add, “Consecrating” yourself usually means offering yourself up in order to foster a deeper devotion. People don’t just do this with Mary; you can also consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to the Holy Angels, etc.

Makes sense. So if I truly want to learn to love Mary, Christ’s mother, and now our mother, this would be a good way to start. I’ve prayed rosaries and still do, but I’m missing that love and devotion piece, probably because I haven’t been exposed to her for 60 years, actually told to ignore her (except at Christmas in the manger.) Kind of sad when you think about it. Thanks, Tis_Bearself

I would recommend maybe you start with “33 Days to Morning Glory” then. Just read it and see if it’s something you can relate to.

The St. Louis de Montfort and St. Maximilian Kolbe writings contain some fairly involved theologies of Mary that might be hard for a new Catholic to follow or accept. Sort of like the big debate in the other Mary thread based on some writings of St. Alphonse Liguori. I’ve been devoted to Mary for decades, since I was a very small child, and even I found the Kolbe one kind of hard to follow.
I’m pretty sure “33 Days” was written to give people an easier book to use for devotions to Mary.
