Consecration to Mary?

I used to be afraid of committing more and more, would I let God down by my own slothfulness? Would I get discouraged again?
Thank you MaryTheresa. That’s really the point.

Like the Israelites in the desert, afraid God won’t give us water, craving meat and insisting that the manna isn’t good enough. God says “Go, I will drive out the nations before you” yet we keep looking back over our shoulders thinking about how good it was back in Egypt.

Thanks for the encouragement. I ordered the book from Tan publishers.

I have been at an all night vigil service where many prayers are said throughout the night and one of them is a Consecration to Mary. I think I remember part of the below text.

I refrained from saying it. Because I think a consecration is something you should think long and hard on – not just something you say with the rest of the congregants.

Also offering yourself as a slave is serious stuff.

Does anyone agree?

Can there be consequences to making half-hearted consecrations?
Hail, then, O immaculate Mary, living tabernacle of the Divinity, where the Eternal Wisdom willed to be hidden and to be adored by angels and by men! Hail, O Queen of Heaven and earth, to whose empire everything is subject which is under God. Hail, O sure refuge of sinners, whose mercy fails no one. Hear the desires which I have of the Divine Wisdom; and for that end receive the vows and offerings which in my lowliness I present to thee.
I, N_____, a faithless sinner, renew and ratify today in thy hands the vows of my Baptism; I renounce forever Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before. In the presence of all the heavenly court I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, as thy slave, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception, according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God in time and in eternity.
Receive, O benignant Virgin, this little offering of my slavery, in honor of, and in union with, that subjection which the Eternal Wisdom deigned to have to thy maternity; in homage to the power which both of you have over this poor sinner, and in thanksgiving for the privileges with which the Holy Trinity has favored thee. I declare that I wish henceforth, as thy true slave, to seek thy honor and to obey thee in all things.
O admirable Mother, present me to thy dear Son as His eternal slave, so that as He has redeemed me by thee, by thee He may receive me! O Mother of mercy, grant me the grace to obtain the true Wisdom of God; and for that end receive me among those whom thou lovest and teachest, whom thou leadest, nourishest and protectest as thy children and thy slaves.
O faithful Virgin, make me in all things so perfect a disciple, imitator and slave of the Incarnate Wisdom, Jesus Christ thy Son, that I may attain, by thine intercession and by thine example, to the fullness of His age on earth and of His glory in Heaven. Amen.

I consecrated myself to Mary before I even converted to Catholicism. Her hand in my conversion was so strong, I felt that I had to “give back” if you will. I joined the Militia Immaculatae and haven’t looked back.

It’s a serious spiritual commitment, to be sure. However, Mother knows best, so why wouldn’t we want to do as she wishes?

Blessings to you! You are most welcome. I’ll add some other middle of the night thoughts I had for others and leave it at that:

Many of us often hold back from doing these things because we tell ourselves we aren’t ‘perfect’ enough to do something… we imagine all of our past failings and surely we don’t want to fail God! So we hold back, even when we hear the knocking at our door. Picture Jesus standing there… knock, knock…

Now picture Jesus holding his hand out to Peter on the water saying, “Why did you doubt?” Think of all the times Jesus says, “Oh ye of little faith, where is your faith?”

When we get caught up in self doubt we think we’re being humble. ‘Oh Lord, I’m too this or that, I’ll just fail again and feel worse off than before so I’ll wait, I’ll hold off until I think I’m going to be better at this.’

It begins to sound more like pride than humility. The gift is there for us, we know it’s from God and is going to be good… but it might take some effort, maybe I can’t do that…

We’re right! We can’t do it alone! So pride (or the devil) says I’ll decide when I’m ready to jump in here and if I can’t do it full on perfect, then I’ll just walk on by for now…

It’s in the surrender of our wills that we take on His Will. We won’t ever be ‘perfect enough so that now I can begin’… rather it’s in our imperfection that He grants us the graces needed to not only begin but to carry it out.

Humility says, ‘I’m not perfect, I’m going to need help, a boost… and a swift kick in the butt at times too, but I’ll surrender to You, Lord, be it done unto me according to thy word…’

Consider our pride when He offers us a gift and we choose not to take it because WE judge ourselves not good enough… it’s pride trying to masquarade as humility.

Blessed Virgin Mary is the Perfect Model of Humility, in imitating her we learn to surrender to His call. In consecrating our lives to her, we say ‘Lord, I’m not able to do many things but I will give them all to Mary, she will sort them out and present them to you in a way that is acceptable, in a way that honors You most.’

We want to pick flowers and give them to Jesus, but first… we give them to His Mother and Ours… She arranges them in perfect order for us and lays them at His feet. Now our gift is worthy!

Peter, the impetuous one, is always jumping in and saying something… like, "Lord, I’ll NEVER deny YOU!’ He’s always going off this way or that and flops many times… but who does Jesus give the Keys of the Kingdom to? Peter! He takes Peter’s willingness to act, adds a good dose of His Holy Spirit… and sends him forth. Had Peter not been willing to act, he’d have doubted, held back and gotten nowhere, sinking the moment he took his eyes off Jesus’ outstretched hand.

If we lack persistance and the will to get back up when we do fail, where is our Faith?

Giving oneself to Mary is like wrapping ourselves in a security blanket, she takes our hand when we stumble and fall. She gently sets us on the path again to her Son. That’s the whole point, we can’t do it alone but when we align ourselves with Our Mother, she leads us home and smooths out the wrinkles, slicks down our hair and makes us more presentable to The King of Glory!

Blessings to all…

Here is the first sentence, and the last short paragraph that begins on page 65, the 27th day of the preparation:

“Jesus Christ our Savior, true God and true Man, ought to be the last end of all our devotions, else they are false and delusive…”

“If then, we establish solid devotion to our Blessed Lady, it is only to establish more perfectly devotion to Jesus Christ, and to provide an easy and secure means for finding Jesus Christ. Devotion to our Lady is necessary for us, as I have already shown, and will show still further hereafter, as a means of finding Jesus Christ perfectly, of loving Him tenderly, of serving Him faithfully.”
I like the disclaimer 🙂

I would recommend reading True devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Here is a link to that book: amazon.com/Montfort-Publi…8368545&sr=8-8 . Once you’ve read True devotion to the Blessed Virgin you should use this book to actually make your act of consecration to the Blessed Virgin: amazon.com/Preparation-To…8368970&sr=1-1 . I like being consecrated to The Virgin Mary, it makes me think twice before I would sin because I’m supposed to do everything I do for Mary. It definitely makes you more cognizant of what you’re doing and why you do it. I’m not going to lie to you, it is a struggle sometimes, but so is just remaining in a state of grace.

And I did it!!!

And already She has helped me with something for which I have been asking AND she granted me a grace as well.

I am her slave. 🙂

I have done the Consecration to Mary =) the first thing I’d recommend doing is reading St Louis de Montfort’s book “True Devotion to Mary”, that would answer many questions that you might have =) it’s a great book.

For me, when I started reading the book (actually I read the “Secret of Mary” first) I couldn’t understand it, and it seemed like idolatry to me… I asked St Louis de Montfort for prayers and that evening when I was praying the Hail Mary, I suddenly ‘got’ it and it finally made sense to me.

We could consecrate ourselves directly to Jesus, but if we do this consecration, then we’re giving ourselves to our Blessed Mother and asking her to give us to Jesus more perfectly. So the end result is the same, we are consecrated to Jesus, - but more perfectly because it’s through Mary. St Louis de Montfort gives an example of - giving a present to a king… if you give it through the queen, she can make it more beautiful.

In addition, it’s a great way of being under Our Lady’s protection and she prays for you and leads you further in holiness 🙂

Its effectiveness depends on how much you make use of it… St Louis de Montfort is very specific about this, he warns us that if we know this “secret of Mary”, it would be important to make use of it.

The day I consecrated myself, I was filled with many doubts and had some spiritual attack I think. But when I went to Mass and Communion, I felt a lot of peace and like God would like me to say the prayer, so I did. I had a lot of peace after and really felt closer to Mary, and like I truly belong to her now. I was glad I did the Consecration 🙂 later on, sadly I kind of fell away from practicing it well - through forgetting it, etc, - but I still renewed the consecration as you should do every year on the same day. (you choose Mary’s feast day… and there’s a 33 day preparation period). Now I’m looking to read the book again and renew my Consecration once more 🙂 and really practice it better from now on. There are certain prayers you can do, like the Little Crown of Mary, that help to practice it daily. But mostly the devotion is interior rather than exterior. St Louis describes this in detail in his book. (the book is available online or you could buy it, - personally I like to have the book in front of me in print :)).

There was a bit of a discernment process at first, - I prayed about it but ultimately God gave me a desire to belong to Mary in this way and that’s why I did it. The preparation is intense and it’s best to maybe do the prayers in the morning or during the day and think about the readings throughout the day. A big aspect of this is praying to the Holy Spirit for light on the devotion.

You live out the devotion on a daily basis by doing everything through Mary, basically making her a part of everything so she can guide you and lead you to holiness. There are prayers that are recommended in the book to say, and although they are optional, it’s very good to say them daily. Don’t fear of not meeting the commitment, because as long as you remember to do it, you will. The Consecration would always be there unless you willfully renounce it (which would not be a good thing to do, but I can’t imagine anyone truly renouncing this Consecration if they love Jesus and Mary). It’s kind of like the morning offering: you do it and then it’s effective for the whole day… only this is for your whole life and eternity. 🙂 it’s very safe, there is nothing scary about belonging to Mary. She really takes care of you. And it’s not idolatry if you consecrate yourself to her in order to belong more fully to Jesus: as long as He is the end of your devotion. St Louis says this too. As for it being a vow, it’s not a formal vow like the religious make yet I think it has the character of a vow. There’s a responsibility in the same way as we have responsibility to make use of God’s graces… but it’s really about the effort, as long as you try to live it out, God and Mary would teach you the rest. The only problem is if a person forgets about it or is too lazy to remember it. The prayers and external practices are optional, though very helpful. Like I said it’s mostly an interior devotion; that is the essential part. 🙂

Regarding your last question… “What if one has prayed for increased devotion to Mary and has given intellectual assent to it but it is not yet firm in his heart? Is devotion to Mary a prerequisite or a result? Or both?” that’s a good question, I’d say that if you WANT to have greater devotion to Mary, that is already a grace from the Holy Spirit and this consecration can help you with that. The preparation process can also really help, much can happen in 33 days of prayer 🙂 if by the end of the preparation you really don’t feel ready, you can do it again for another feast day. But - based on my experience and the experience of some others I know, the devil might really try to stop you from consecrating yourself by suggesting various doubts, fears, etc, - so I think as long as you know that you can say the words and mean them, - don’t be afraid and do it 🙂

On the day of the consecration, you go to Confession (if you can, but a day or two before is fine too), Communion, and then kneel before the Tabernacle and say the prayer. You can then do something special for Our Blessed Mother like light a candle, give an offering to the poor, etc.

Hope that helps!

God bless! =)

Yes, you should definitely think about it seriously… there’s even a 33 day preparation period 🙂 it has the character of a vow. Like you said, it’s serious stuff 🙂 If someone does it half-heartedly, they might not have the understanding/will/strength to live out their consecration later on… if they do the consecration, they should be willing to put it into practice and take it seriously as well.

God bless

I did it earlier this year - and did not have any reserve about going through with it because it was recommended by the same parish priest that I took catechism from and Confirmed me. I do what he says I guess is what I am saying and I trust in his confidence as well as reflecting upon all the Blessed Virgin as done for me that I obligated myself to do what I could for her.

This Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary according to St. Louis de Montfort is not something that I can say I had a great understanding of when I did it - but it is more like a seed that grows, or a beginning of a new life, though it really is a renewal of the Baptismal vows. But, I can say that it is very mysterious and full of grace to live entirely in Mary. But it does take daily consious effort to keep it up and continue to grow in the Consecration.

If your are considering - don’t be scared off by the commitment, though the devil would sure want to scare you away from it!!

The Mother of God knows what we need so much more than we ourselves do, and it is good to trust in her!

In Christ through Mary

First of all…what a beautiful thread!
I started the Total Consecration to Mary in October to make the consecration on the Feast of The Presentation of Mary in November.
for the past two years I have prayed the rosary daily and in the past year I have been given through prayer…Novena to Mary, Undoer of Knots…asked for help with my spiritual life and 4 days into this novena…my parish pastor contacted me and said he was beginning his certification in Spiritual Direction and needed someone to work with for this process and he told me that my name kept coming to him in his prayers on who to ask…ironically we both had our prayers answered. so my prayer life and spiritual journey has really taken off. This past september I was layed off from work…and came across the Total Consecration on the internet…got excited about it and got started…my SD priest and pastor asked me to jounal about my experience through the preparation. and over this past week…I have seemingly hit a mental road block and after the intial excitment for half of the preparation have become quite frightened about completing as worried about not being good enough…suddenly not sure if I can “give” all to Mary as required as feel too selfish…very worried and skeptical…after reading through this thread…I think most here seem to inidcate that Mary will take care of this for me…I read on a website that Mary can make the process very painful for you if you do not totally submit and you need to be sure that you are prepared…somehow I think the evil one may be trying to influence me away…am I crazy?

Sounds like you are taking this seriously, and I found that I started getting cold feet on the day I chose for consecration - but my priest said it could be the devil tempting me away. Went through with it though. Changed my life forever - but definitely adjusting into living out the consecration while renewing it day by day. An Ave Maria for you.

Hoops0826…thanks for your reply! It seems you have encountered something very similar to me in making the Consecration. As I think about your response about the Consecration changing your life…I can see how the devil would want to discourage and tempt people away from the Consecration. I am going forward and depending on the mercy of God and Mary to disregard any skepticism or fear that assaults me in making the Consecration. Through this process and the “cold feet”…I cant see anything better than being under the protection of Mother Mary!!!
Thanks for the Ave…I need it and an Ave for you. God Bless you
