consecration to mary

what does it mean to consecrate myself to Mary and would it be ok for me to do it before my first confession and confirmation
 
What kind of consecration do you mean? When I was in RCIA I made a very informal consecration to Mary’s Immaculate Heart just by saying a little prayer. That sort of very informal consecration would be something you could do.

Usually when people speak of the consecration to Mary though they mean the total consecration to Jesus through Mary promoted by St. Louis de Montfort. For this I’m pretty sure you are required to go to confession and receive communion immediately before making the consecration, so making it before your first confession would not be an option.

St. Louis’s total consecration is a really intense thing and not to be taken on except by someone already very mature in their faith and who has thought and prayed over the decision for some time. As I understand it, it essentially consists of giving over your soul entirely to Mary such that even the credit due before God for your good actions and the rewards you would have received for them are given instead to Mary to distribute as she sees fit. It’s a very difficult spirituality for most people who are just entering the Catholic Church to understand. That said, it’s a beautiful consecration which many Popes, including Bl. John Paul II, made.

I would probably wait a few years after being received into the Church, continuing a strong devotion to Mary all that time, and then read St. Louis de Montfort’s book usually published under the title True Devotion to Mary, and then discern whether it is a consecration you feel called to make.
 
but i feal so strongly for my dont know if its the right word but i guess to say devotion to mary i mean she is our mother i want to make her happy and through making hher happy try and make jesus happy dont know if its wrong to think that way let me know if i said anything wrong still in rcia:confused::confused::confused:

Read the book by DeMonfort and then decide. It isn’t big. He explains what it entails.
If you’re not sure after reading it, then wait a while and read it again.

Just a thought.
 
thanks i just know after my mom died and i started my journey into the catholic church the more i learnt about mary the more my love for her grew

You may make the morning offering each and every morning. Upon awaking, offer all your
works, sufferings, joys, thoughts, to Jesus thru the hands and heart of Mary. That way
everything you do that day becomes a prayer and then you will be praying like Jesus
wanted when He said, “pray aways.”

At night, make the act of contrition before retiring.

Just a thought.
 
You may want to ask Jesus to save some poor thing that is going to die that day and is
not making it. There are so many who have no one to care for them especially the young.

i have another question. I know that Mary prays for us and we can ask Her to pray but can we ask her for help. for instance could i say hail Mary Holy Mother help me throughout the day that i may have more compassion today or something along those lines or would that be considered idolatry
 
It is wonderful that you feel called to make the Total Consecration. As has already been suggested though you should wait a while and read Saint Louis’s True Devotion and pray about it. It is a very serious and solemn occasion after all. But don’t worry you have plenty of time.

One makes the consecration on a Marian feast and the Feast of the Annunciation is the feast recommended by Saint Louis himself. The earliest you can start the actual preparation period for the consecration is the 20th of February. Confession and communion are a requirement though confirmation isn’t. I’m assuming you are in RCIA right now in which case you could consider the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on July 16th (preparation period beginning at the earliest on June 13th).

If it is something you would ask your earthly mother to pray for you for, then it isn’t idolatry. Our Lady is not the one who directly gives you more compassion. The Holy Spirit is, but as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Our Lady can ask the Holy Spirit to give you that compassion.

But here is something to think about. The reason why the Holy Spirit can give you more compassion is because the Holy Spirit dwells in you. Why does the Holy Spirit dwell in you? Because Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit to be your Advocate and Counselor. How can that be if you are a sinner? Because your sins were atoned for by Jesus Christ. How was that done? Through His sacrifice on Calvary, where He died for your sins. Now how is it that He could die for your sins? How could God die for you? Because He took on flesh, because He became man, because of the Incarnation. Through Whom was the Incarnation accomplished–that is, where did Jesus get His Sacred Humanity from? Through Mary.

Thus it can be said that Our Lady indeed, but indirectly, gives you that compassion you are asking for. This is why She is referred to as the Mediatrix of All Graces, although this is not as of now an official dogma of the Church.

Myself I never ask for anything, I pray for the forgiveness of my own sins, the souls in purgatory, and the reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And I offer up all my suffering for the Lord to do as He wills. I’m pretty much in constant pain from my joints.

I also add other prayer’s at night as mentioned the Act of Contrition, St Michael, then often the Litanys, sometime the Divine Chaplet. Depends. Always the Rosary though

Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary means pretty much that you are a slave of Mother Mary and that you offer up everything that you do to her. However, while I encourage that you do eventually make this devotion, if I were you, I’d concentrate on learning all about the Catholic faith, and making my confirmation first. Also, pick a good Saint for your confirmation, maybe St. Louis de Montfort if you feel like you are being called to consecration to the Blessed Virgin.

Consencration to Our Lady ia bout sanctity. Go ahead! Do it! People feel this pull when they begin seriously to desire sanctity and therefore also realize their personal weaknesses an the real danger of falling on that road. Total Consecration to Jesus through our Lady (St. Louis de Monteforte’s) when done with one’s whole heart and proper motives (to become a saint and with resignation of will) is as close as you can get to a “guarantee” to sanctity or against falling from Christ. Ask her for all your material and spiritual needs- That’s why Christ gave her to us. Worship is entirely something else.

i have found the link online and started reading it as for taking my time to make sure this is the right thing i can understand waiting till my confirmation but other than that i don’t see why i wouldn’t wait i know its a serious decision but when i first decided to start rcia i knew that would be serious living in the south and all but i couldn’t hold it off any longer i had held of joining the catholic church for a year because of my protestant family when i knew its what i needed to do i cant explain it but i know im being drawn to a stronger devotion to Mary i love her she is our mother and i wish to please her but ya i have started reading true devotion to mary
