consecration to mary

i have found the link online and started reading it as for taking my time to make sure this is the right thing i can understand waiting till my confirmation but other than that i don’t see why i wouldn’t wait i know its a serious decision but when i first decided to start rcia i knew that would be serious living in the south and all but i couldn’t hold it off any longer i had held of joining the catholic church for a year because of my protestant family when i knew its what i needed to do i cant explain it but i know im being drawn to a stronger devotion to Mary i love her she is our mother and i wish to please her but ya i have started reading true devotion to mary

That’s very good that Our Lady is calling you. Also here is a link to a very good catechism that you can read that will help you to learn your faith VERY WELL as a new convert:amazon.com/My-Catholic-Faith-Louis-LaRavoire/dp/0963903268/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321731979&sr=8-1-spell#_ . I like it the best because it’s simple, I read one topic a day and for me it’s much easier to understand then the catechism of the Catholic Church.

Consecrating yourself to Mary means giving yourself to God through her hands… so you give yourself to her so that she could give you more perfectly to Jesus. 🙂 it’s to Jesus through Mary. This is considered a sure way of spiritual growth because Mary can take care of us better than we can take care of ourselves, and she can give us to God more perfectly than we can do that ourselves.

It would be best to do this after your first Confession and when you are receiving the Sacraments, because part of this devotion is receiving Communion on the day of your Consecration. There is also a preparation period of 33 days. There’s a book called “True Devotion to Mary” by St Louis de Montfort that describes the consecration and how to make it 🙂

Such an interesting thread. As an infant my parents (who adopted me) brought me to the Dominican nuns and had me consecrated to Mary. What does this mean when you consecrate an infant? The infant has not made a choice to be devoted to Mary. I have no devotion to her now or ever in my lifetime, although it is interesting that I usually end up attending churches named St. Mary, either Episcopal or Roman Catholic.

What does it mean if Russia is actually consecrated to Mary? Who sort of difference would it mean for that country?

Likely it was just a short prayer said by your parents for Our Lady to watch over you etc.

The complete abandonment of her [Russia’s] errors such as communism, abortion etc. and a whole scale conversion to the Catholic Faith. Possibly even at an institutional level (i.e. the hierarchy that is in schism formally renouncing such and coming into communion with the Bishop of Rome).

Hi FutureCatholic,

I am a Catholic revert. I have been away for many, many years and been in the protestant church. One of the things that brought me back was feeling I was being drawn by the Blessed Mother, especially Our Lady of Guadalupe. I have only been back about 3 years, went one year through the RCIA and now I am reading True Devotion to Mary and planning on doing the consecration.

I think it is awesome when Jesus calls us to know and love his mother.
It’s kind of like this. I have one son. When I know his friends and his friends know me, and we are friends also, my son grows closer to those friends.

One of the things I recently read in True Devotion, is Mary is just as much his mother in heaven as she was here on earth. That’s cool. Jesus wants us to be close to his mother.

So, I say what you are doing sounds right to me. Read True Devotion and make the consecration if that is what you feel called to do.

Thank you FC1 for asking this question. I hope the great answers given helped you even half as much as they helped me [a cradle Catholic]. I have been very neglectful of my duty to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
