I don’t even know where to start and even what I want (name removed by moderator)ut on.

My niece is 15, she is not doing well in life. She is failing in school. She has smoked pot, drank, and recently taken some pills.

My sister got pregnant from a still-married man when she was in her 20’s. He is a loser whose dream was a criminal enterprise of selling pot. He spent the last year in jail. Thankfully my sister never married him and they cut ties as a “couple” when my niece was 2. He has been somewhat involved in her life although certainly not as a good guiding influence and has never paid child support.
My sister married a very nice man when my niece was 5 and all seemed to go well. He was a very good dad, loving, involved with school and just nice. I breathed a sigh of relief. She makes bad choices, she had an affair, got caught and everything fell apart. They separated and divorced and since then my niece has just gone downhill. There is no discipline in her life. Year after year it has just gotten worse. No consequences for bad grades, not turning in work. Now what I see is a complete lack of connection between them. I honestly think my sister does not want to be a parent. No discipline is one thing, but now I see a real lack of love. They dont have a family life and I see no hope of my niece getting back on the right track. They dont eat dinner together, my sister does nothing to follow up on school work. She is often left at home alone while my sister works or socializes. I think the child is lonely. I am married with 2 boys 5 and 2. We took my niece with us to the beach this weekend. We spent Sat, Sun and Mon there. My sister picked my niece up from us on her way home from work. She dropped her off at home and went to a cook out. She was away from her child for 3 days and does not even spend the evening with her!

My husband and I are hoping to be in a larger house before September and tonight I told him that I want my niece to come and live with us. This has been on my heart for a long time but we dont have room for her yet. He has known this is what I want and he is open to it. We have always talked of fostering children when my boys get a bit older. My niece needs help now! I hope that she wants to come and live with us and that my sister will agree and allow it. I think she will.

Any thoughts or advise you have will be helpful.

Maybe keep inviting your niece to spend time with you over the summer and see how things go? If you think that your niece is somebody you feel comfortable having under your roof, go ahead and broach the question with your sister and (if she approves) with your niece.

Going in to this, I think it needs to be clear that this is a time limited offer. If your niece is able to obey house rules and is pleasant to live with, she can stay for fall term 2014. If that’s a success, she can stay for spring term 2015. Don’t make any openended invitations–be clear that 1) there are house rules and 2) your invitation will be reviewed periodically to see if the situation is still working for you.

It will be tricky to come up with house rules, but I’m sure the CAF crew can help.

I foresee that one difficulty here is that she’s used to you being the fun auntie that shows her a good time, and it may be difficult to transition over to you being an authority figure with expectations. Maybe do some weekend visits where you simulate house rules?

Being a 15-year-old, she’ll need a room of her own. Ideally, she’d have a bathroom of her own, but that may not be feasible. But she does need a space of her own that she can retreat to in case it all gets to be too much for her.

Best wishes!

Reading your post made me utter a pained laugh. My youngest sister is like yours. Never acted like a parent, told many lies, slept around, got divorced, went from one loser to another. Finally she married someone dangerous who liked my teenage niece a little too much. My mom stepped in and said either your husband leaves or I’m taking your kids. Well my mom has raised her kids and my sister could care less. Tough situation and certainly had some tricky moments. I’m sure God will bless you for taking this on. My only concern is how young your own kids are. I would never leave my little kids alone with my sister or her damaged kids. Protect your own first.

You need to think long and hard, and think of your children first. We had my husbands Niece come and live with us after her mother kicked her out of the house (for a stupid reason, mom has problems). Situation was a bit different, she was 20 and lasted about 6 months with us, even when she lost her job, we supported her and didn’t force her to find another one as she had money to last the 2015 school year. She had some simple rules,

Clean up after herself
Go to school(college)
And make curfew. 11:00 week nights and 1:00 weekends

This girl paid no room and board, and we included her in everything like she was our own daughter. Our son is grown and married, so no conflict there. Well things worked out at first then her BF was hell bent on seeing how far they could push things. (He was always welcomed at my home but never came over, because I know his BS game)

So then he started disrespecting us on FB. We would not bite, then he started pushing the curfew limit. She got two warnings, then one night shortly after Christmas she was drunk and late and then joined in with disrespecting us on FB. There is a lot more filler, but by then we had enough.

When she came home that night, I asked to see her key, she looked puzzled and then I took it off her key ring and told her he won, and now your all his. That we no longer trusted her and couldn’t live with anyone we couldn’t trust. So until she found a place she would not be allowed in the house unless someone was here. It got nasty, but we had to do what we had to do.

You give up your privacy, you spend more money. Between the extra utility’s and food we were spending an extra couple of hundred dollars a month, not counting extra activities we did as a family movies etc.

We are cordial now when we see each other, but I feel great sadness for her as she has dropped out of school and is living with him in a basement room of his friends house that has two families already living in it. I just pray that she learns from her mistakes and realizes the BF is a loser (other family member’s didn’t believe us, but now they do) and moves on. She does have an open opportunity to move in with Grandparents, and was close to, but then he bought her a Husky dog so she is staying put for now.

Good Luck

Yes to what Hopenhappiness said.

Unfortunately, there are kids and people who can figure out how to screw up any situation.

Definitely limit your expectations and be very clear about house rules going in (curfew, no boys at home when nobody else is there, etc.) and be prepared to move her along if it doesn’t work out.
