I am beginning the process of exploring service to God and others in the diaconate. Exploring service in the diaconate is something that has long been on my heart. My wife has expressed her support for me in doing so. I hold a Master of Divinity degree as I had once considered the priesthood, and spent five years of graduate level study in a Catholic seminary.

I realize the time involved and the personal commitment that is required of those who serve as deacons. What are some ways that deacons balance their dedication in the workplace, their service to others in the Church, and their family commitments?
Are there ways of blending these together?

I have not yet submitted an application to my diocese. Please pray for me as I continue to discern.

The deacon’s work begins at home, and he should be a light to others by the way he runs his family and how he acts. Yet the crucial part of his work and what sets him apart is that he may read the Gospel, preach and administer baptism and witness weddings. This is the right of the deacon. His work is very varied and if you are interested in this balance, then you could work on church projects which your kids attend, minister to a Catholic school where they are, or work with your wife as catechists. Also you and your family could visit people who are lonely, or sick, (you having viaticum). Those are all wonderful roles. God bless.

Thank you Titus. What you have written is quite encouraging to me.
I have an extensive background in education and also in pastoral ministry. Please pray for me as I continue to discern the call to vocational service in the diaconate.
