Can someone explain Cardinal Bernardin’s “Consistent Ethic of Life”?
Was the Cardinal’s doctrine consistant with catholic teaching, dogma?
Was this accepted by Rome?

As I understand it, the primary objection to the “Seamless Garment” approach is that:

  1. *]Abortion and Gay Marriage become just one of many issues, therefore
*]Objection to either seems only as wrong as objection to lesser issues, despite
*]The Vatican recognizing that on several issues there can be a legitimate difference of opinion.

Abortion and Gay Marriage and Euthanasia and other intrinsic evils are of whole different class of evil that, say, immigration policy and laws about the welfare state.

The biggest problem with the “Seamless Garment” is not when politicians accept it wholesale, but when they pick and choose away parts where they cannot legitimately pick and choose.
