I’m new here; I hope it’s OK to open up an old thread.
Some of my favorite Catholic/Christian songs are ones I sing in my church choir:

Les Rameaux (The Palms), by Jean-Baptiste Faure (we sing it in French)
Haec Dies, by William Byrd
The Holy City, by Weatherly/Adams
and of course, Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus!

I also have the “Abba Pater” CD , and it is beautiful.
 
I was so impressed by the singing of the Greek and Eastern rite Catholics at the Mass in Vatican City celebrating our new Pope!!! Does anyone know where I can get some good Eastern Rite Catholic music being sung in Greek or other Eastern languages?

There are a number of excellent CD’s available from various sources.

The VESPERS FOR THE FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS is excellent. It’s by a group from Chicago.

Also excellent is THE FOUNTAIN OF IMMORTALITY by the Choir of the VALAAM MONASTERY from Valaam, Russia.

Most of the stuff that is out there are from Orthodox choirs and Orthodox Monasteries.

You should look at the site of the ICON AND BOOK SERVICE in Washington,DC. They are part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic church and they do have a website. Just do a search and it will come up. You can also get on their mailing list for a catalog.

I love lisening to the “Chants from the Holy Land” series on iTunes. Sister Marie Kyerouz (sp?) is a favorite, along with the choir “The Sixteen”. Their album “Ikon” is great! What Catholic music does everyone listen to here? (Contemporary or Traditional although I’m more a fan of the latter.)
 
I love chants, whether Gregorian or Byzantine. I’m not one for contemporary Catholic music. I enjoy something awesome and moving and I personally don’t find contemporary Catholic music awesome or particularly moving. Of course I’m generalizing and I’m certain there is contemporary music that I would, but I’m not aware of it yet.
 
Yeah! (GO Gregorian!)

I love Byzantine in particular though. Maronite and Armenian are stunning though when sung properly and not improved to death.
 
If you like traditional (which i guess means old?) you might want to check out Palestrina (Missa Sicut Illiium (sp?) is vey nice) It’s not chant, but sort of the next step in the musical history of church music – well a few steps more maybe.

Also, one of my all time favorite pieces is Allegri’s Miserere – very beautiful. It was a piece whose composition was originally top secret and the piece was guarded and was only performed in the Sistine Chapel until Mozart (at age 14!!) heard it there and with his genius musical memory was able to copy it down after hearing it. (Originally, there was an excommunication for anyone who wrote it down or performed it outside of the Vatican but this was lifted.) In any case a very beautiful piece – I recommend the performance by the Tallis Scholars.

It is all still a capella, voices only, 4 to 5 member choirs.

Wish things like this were still performed at mass.
 
I don’t listen to much christian contemporary music so it’s hard to keep up on any good Catholic artists. …A great non-contemporary CD I will recommend is the Byrd Masses for 3,4,5 voices Ave Verum by The Hilliard Ensemble.

Very nice. Thanks for sharing! I went to Streaming Music toward the bottom on the right and clicked on Windows Media Player and listened to Ancient Faith Radio. I really like it and will be a regular listener. Thanks again:)

I agree with the contemporary stuff. In fact, the parish I belong to has a “Mass Setting” whose melody sounds like it belongs in a 1920’s speakeasy. I have been attending a parish that has more traditional music including chant. Occasionally, they will have a Mass with an Orchestra that does more elaborate settings (mainly from classical composers).

I have been expanding my collection of sacred music that includes many Masses (Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi…) and Chants. To help in my expansion I picked up 100 Best Sacred Works. Although there are some more modern stuff (and probably some non-Catholic selections too) in it, I picked it up for the older pieces.
 
I love the old Latin hymns. As an alto, I used to be involved in choirs and know them all by heart - still remembering them voice and words without music in front of me - to the astonishment of some people.

One favorite is: Ave Verum Corpus
(hope I have the title right)
And the Latin Mass - I think of the Angels.

I was wondering about the name and performer of a Latin song I heard in a YouTube video about St. Gianna. The video can be found at youtube.com/watch?v=_OKCh11tufA. Two songs are played - one is a Taize song (Tu Es Fonte De Vida). The other, heard from 3:48 to 5:16, is the one I’m looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
