I was recently speaking to a friend of mine regarding my newish love of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, especially since it has been avaliable in England on EWTN. To my surprise, he responded with some reasonably strong objections and asked how can I possibly offer God the Body, Blood, soul and divinity of Christ in atonement for anything? As far as he is concerned - Christ is the only one that offered anything in atonement - his life. That, if you like, is his theological doubt - a linguistic doubt is how one my offer all that for the sake of the passion? And for Divine Mercy - it is a re expression of the Sacred Heart or the Most Holy Redeemer - an image of the Lord giving himself out of love.

What do you guys think about it? I assumed the Divine Mercy made solid theological sense because it was on EWTN (is that ridiculous???) now I’m worried I don’t know what I’m praying! I got my Mum into it and she loves it too and now I’m worried I’ve led her astray! Help!

Don’t worry! We offer the sacrifice of the Mass and pray to the Father that He accept it,
so I don’t see the difference.

Peace 🙂

We are in Christ. We are the Body of Christ. We participate in His Sacrifice daily if we truly LIVE our Faith.“We offer you”… is our acknowledgement of the continuing Sacrifice and our concommittant indebtedness. It is the same thing as beseeching or praying to God in the Name of the Son which we do at EVERY mass and should do in our personal prayers.

Jesus Himself told St. Faustina to spread this devotion. The source is Jesus.

Nah FF, don’t let it rattle you. 🙂

I love the DMC too and have considered something like this. What does your friend think that every believing Christian does in converting? Don’t we **all **fall on our knees and in deep contrition for our sins offer God the sacrifice of “the body and blood, soul and divinity” of His “dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins”? What other possible standing could any of us have before God than this?! We cannot offer our own merits! What then do any of us offer to God that might effect our salvation?

Your friend is either confused, (if Catholic) or just messed up (if he’s not).

Not ot worry, the divine mercy chaplet is a beautiful prayer. If your friend isn’t Catholic may explain his aversion to such prayers. If he/she is catholic then let him know that as Catholics we pray in such a way at mass every day all over the world.

Peace!

Perfect explanation.👍

This is exactly what we do when we participate in the Mass – all of us, together with the priest, are offering Christ’s one, eternal, perfect sacrifice to the Father. Otherwise, the concept of a priesthood of all believers, as noted by St. Peter in his epistle, would be nonsense.
