I’m not being coy here - has the Church changed her teaching in this area?
Catholic political and governmental teachings are not my strong suit

No, but different societies in different times need different methods of governance, yes?

Yes, the Church has toned down such rhetoric

Pope Leo X was a warrior Pope. When Martin Luther saw him riding into Rome riding a white horse wearing gold platted armor, as the common people with the fear of being arrested and tortured, put their heads to the ground, he was appalled as we all would be,

I love the armchair tough guys who want to see non-Catholics executed. You’re going to try putting my non-Catholic family and friends on the execution block…hope you’re a better shot than I am.

On a happier note, I LOVE that the op posted something crazy as a joke only to have people come out of the woodwork who sincerely believe it. Never change, CAF.

The proposition that it was against the will of the Holy Ghost was, as mentioned by (name removed by moderator), condemned in Exsurge Domine, so I would say no.

No one is suggesting that your non-catholic family members be executed.

No one cares that you can cite some document from the 1600s in support of burning witches or throwing Jews into wells or whatever, you weird medieval fetishists.

This place…

Provided they aren’t public about their differing beliefs, right? Maybe they can also pay the jizya?

So Thomas Moore, who oversaw the arrest, torture and burning of four heretics, before he himself was arrested and executed, is perfectly fine with you ?

Jim

Ah.

People are having a hard time discerning sarcasm recently.

Thomas Moore was the Chancellor for Henry XVIII who arrested heretics and had them tortured. Those refusing to repent, were burned at the stake

He was canonized, some say for political reasons, the Church claims he repented before his death, but upheld Church doctrine.

Wonderful ! 🤨

Jim

While the mindset has changed, I get the reasoning, however faulty - if you lead people’s eternal souls to damnation, there would be hell to pay.

No. See what (name removed by moderator) has already said about this.

It had to do with the Church getting in bed with the monarchies going back to Constantine.

Like most religions, when they become part of the empire, they lost the teachings of their founders.
