this is not an emergency as your rather hysterical headline here and on other forums claims. It is a magazine article with content offensive to many people. 100,000 people perishing and millions homeless in a tidal wave is an emergency. Hundreds of babies being aborted each day is an emergency. Adults sexually abusing children is an emergency. An offensive magazine article is an annoyance. If you don’t like it, cancel you subscription and notify the publisher why you are doing so. Please get your priorities and your choice of words in order.

Editorially: I suppose that there should have been at least some brief statement – “Couples should find out what birth control options are consistent with their religious beliefs or with their place of worship before actually making such decisions for themselves.

And a statement could have been added at the front of the article such as “Birth control and abortion are controversial subjects in our time. We do not intend to offend anyone. If you are offended by these topics, you may prefer not to read this article. This article is intended to educate those who are not offended so that they may make better decisions for themselves.

I sent Consumer Reports a similar note along with a complaint that more harmful abortion side effects were not included in their article. Today, I electronically have this reply:
Consumer Reports:
Dear [jmm08]:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the article about condoms and contraceptives that appeared in Consumer Reports(r). We appreciate your interest in our organization, and would like to thank you for sharing your comments.

Consumers Union (CU), the publisher of Consumer Reports, has been covering family planning and related medical products and services since its founding in 1936. CU’s mission is to ensure a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers, and we support the consumer’s right to be informed (part of the United Nations charter on human rights). As one way to fulfill our mission, we publish factual, scientifically- based information on public health topics and on legally available products and services provided by the medical profession and healthcare industry. CU has
published comprehensive books about women’s health topics in 1979 and 1992 that covered forms of birth control and abortion in considerable detail. CU does not take public policy positions regarding the use or regulation of contraceptives or abortion procedures.

Basic facts about abortion procedures were included in a sidebar since Consumer Reports has made a commitment to closely covering the efficacy and safety of prescriptions drugs. RU-486, known as the abortion pill, has risks that have not been made clear to the public. There is also confusion in the marketplace between the abortion pill (which aborts a fertilized egg) and the emergency contraception pill (which prevents fertilization and was included in the chart on contraception options). In keeping with CU’s values of accuracy, thoroughness, and integrity, Consumer Reports February 2005 article provides the necessary factual background for comparing benefits and risks of related products and services.

[jmm08], I hope this information has been helpful. In addition, please be assured that I have shared your e-mail with the appropriate members of our Editorial staff for their review. Thank you again for your message and for reading to Consumer Reports, both are truly appreciated.

Please get your priorities and your choice of words in order.
Pardon me. Upon registration did I miss the memo that states that all posts are to be:

1 - Perfectly in line with the thinking and priorities of the majority of the board.

2 - Contain nothing but perfect grammar.

I can’t figure out why you all don’t have comments other than lashing out at someone for their spelling, punctuation or grammar.

Again and again I am reminded why I frequent other Catholic message boards far more often than I do this one.
