Consumerism and Christmas - a few questions

Some here have complained about how we celebrate Christmas–all the buying, buying, buying. Scrooge and the Grinch had similar trouble with the holiday.

What Christian denomination do you belong to? Do you have a problem with Christmas buying? If you do have a problem with Xmas buying, where do you draw the line - how much buying is too much?
 
I’m anti-denominational but am a Christian. I would keep this simple for Christmas match the tithe demanded in the OT as offerings to God minus 1%. For a period of say three months. 9% of ones income at most is plenty for the big holiday season and should include meals and other things over gifts.

As for gifts one modest one per person and maybe a few small things in a Christmas stocking for children are fine no need to go overboard.

But I no issue with buying giofts but shouldn’t your gifts be year round and in the good you do for others and the love for those close to you in kind deeds and words? That surely would be most important and show you care.
 
there are some presents i buy “for Christmas” but mostly because that s when they have the sale! my mom loves certain perfuems and cosmetics, so we buy them once a year for her

other than that? i donate to charities and tell my family/friends what i donated to in their name
www.heiferinternational.com will even send them a card… “i gave a sheep in your name” is a great gift for a spinner/knitter. although i also give them yarn.

i joined a group on LiveJournal called Holiday_wishes where people post their wish list and you can read and decide IF you want to send anything. a lot fo folks just want to get mail that isnt bills!
but i have found many thing i dont use i can gift to others thru this list.

Most people I know who complain about “losing Christmas” really just can’t be bothered with anything associated with Christmas, including being friendly toward people at church on Christmas Eve. How many times have you heard the “regulars” complain about the Christmas Catholics who are taking “their” seat. :rolleyes:

Most often when I hear the complaints about Christmas, which are always delivered in a stage voice :D, I think the person doing the complaining is full of himself and simply wants to let everyone know that he’s superior in that he keeps the true meaing of Christmas while the rest of us heathens revel in “pagan” aspects. They seem to be making statements that are just disguised “look at me” pleas. I wonder if a lot of these people are lonely or are expecting a holiday that won’t be the Hallmark version, so they’re raining on the parade.
