I’ve never read that. This is not the Richard Rhor who is suspended from the Franciscans, is it?

Go with both. They’re great.

Imitation of Christ

The Twelfth Chapter
The Royal Road of the Holy Cross

it is the grace of Christ, and not the virtue of man, which can and does bring it about that through fervor of spirit frail flesh learns to love and to gain what it naturally hates and shuns.

To carry the cross, to love the cross, to chastise the body and bring it to subjection, to flee honors, to endure contempt gladly, to despise self and wish to be despised, to suffer any adversity and loss, to desire no prosperous days on earth—this is not man’s way. If you rely upon yourself, you can do none of these things, but if you trust in the Lord, strength will be given you from heaven and the world and the flesh will be made subject to your word. You will not even fear your enemy, the devil, if you are armed with faith and signed with the cross of Christ.

Saint John of the Cross
Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and Bridegroom Christ
SONG OF THE SOUL AND THE BRIDEGROOM

VI
THE BRIDE

Oh! who can heal me?
Give me at once Yourself,
Send me no more
A messenger
Who cannot tell me what I wish.

VII

All they who serve are telling me
Of Your unnumbered graces;
And all wound me more and more,
And something leaves me dying,
I know not what, of which they are darkly speaking.

VIII

But how you persevere, O life,
Not living where you live;
The arrows bring death
Which you receive
From your conceptions of the Beloved.

IX

Why, after wounding
This heart, have You not healed it?
And why, after stealing it,
Have You thus abandoned it,
And not carried away the stolen prey?

X

Quench my troubles,
For no one else can soothe them;
And let my eyes behold You,
For You are their light,
And I will keep them for You alone.

XI

Reveal Your presence,
And let the vision and Your beauty kill me,
Behold the malady
Of love is incurable
Except in Your presence and before Your face.

XII

O crystal well!
Oh that on Your silvered surface
You would mirror forth at once
Those eyes desired
Which are outlined in my heart!

XIII

Turn them away, O my Beloved!
I am on the wing:

WORDS OF ADMONITION OF OUR HOLY FATHER ST. FRANCIS.

ADMONITIONS.
  1. Of the Lord’s Body
The Lord Jesus said to His disciples: “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No man cometh to the Father, but by Me. If you had known Me you would, without doubt, have known My Father also: and from henceforth you shall know Him, and you have seen Him. Philip saith to Him: Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus saith to him: Have I been so long a time with you and have you not known Me? Philip, he that seeth Me seeth [My] Father also. How sayest thou, Shew us the Father?” The Father “inhabiteth light inaccessible,” and “God is a spirit,” and “no man hath seen God at any time.” Because God is a spirit, therefore it is only by the spirit He can be seen, for “it is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.” For neither is the Son, inasmuch as He is equal to the Father, seen by any one other than by the Father, other than by the Holy Ghost. Wherefore, all those who saw the Lord Jesus Christ according to humanity and did not see and believe according to the Spirit and the Divinity, that He was the Son of God, were condemned. In like manner, all those who behold the Sacrament of the Body of Christ which is sanctified by the word of the Lord upon the altar by the hands of the priest in the form of bread and wine, and who do not see and believe according to the Spirit and Divinity that It is really the most holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, are condemned, He the Most High having declared it when He said, “This is My Body, and the Blood of the New Testament,” and “he that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood hath everlasting life.”

Wherefore [he who has] the Spirit of the Lord which dwells in His faithful, he it is who receives the most holy Body and Blood of the Lord: all others who do not have this same Spirit and who presume to receive Him, eat and drink judgment to themselves. Wherefore, “O ye sons of men, how long will you be dull of heart?” Why will you not know the truth and “believe in the Son of God?” Behold daily He humbles Himself as when from His “royal throne” He came into the womb of the Virgin; daily He Himself comes to us with like humility; daily He descends from the bosom of His Father upon the altar in the hands of the priest. And as He appeared in true flesh to the Holy Apostles, so now He shows Himself to us in the sacred Bread; and as they by means of their fleshly eyes saw only His flesh, yet contemplating Him with their spiritual eyes, believed Him to be God, so we, seeing bread and wine with bodily eyes, see and firmly believe it to be His most holy Body and true and living Blood. And in this way our Lord is ever with His faithful, as He Himself says: “Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”

I’ve been thinking about this post a great deal, even during mass this morning. There is a lot here. If one reads the admonitions of our Holy Father Francis without the background, one will miss most of the meat of the matter.

You have to know the historical context in which this was written, the target population, why he wrote it, where he grounds his theology and how it fits into the Tradition of the Church. You also have to know how Francis implemented his own admonitions. You cannot implement them with your 21st century vision. They don’t work. Francis wrote each of the admonitions in response to very specific situations.

This particular admonition is covered in the formation of the friars and nuns over a period of six years. That’s how much there is here. Clare, Bonaventure, Anthony of Padua, Lawrence of Brindisi, Lawrence of Port Maurice and Francisco of Osuna did a great deal of work on this piece of writing based on the testimony of the early friars, nuns and secular Franciscans who were alive when Francis had these written.

Let’s see if we can unpack parts of it. The whole of it requires a great deal of reading from Franciscan theology and the Franciscan masters.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

THE JOURNEY OF THE MIND INTO GOD

Prologue

In the beginning the First Principle, from whom all other illuminations descend as from the Father of lights, by whom is every best gift and every perfect gift, that is the Eternal Father, I do invoke through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the intercession of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the same Mother of Our God and Lord Jesus Christ, and of lessed Francis, our leader and father, to grant that the eyes of our mind (be) illumined to direct our feet in the way of His peace, which exceeds every sense; which peace Our Lord Jesus Christ has proclaimed and has given; the renewer of whose preaching was our Father Francis, announcing at the beginning and end of all his preaching peace, in every salutation choosing peace, in every contemplation longing towards ecstatic peace, as a citizen of that Jerusalem, concerning which that man of peace speaks, who with those who hate peace, was peaceable: Ask for those things which are for the peace of Jerusalem.

I just read this part today!

ADMONITIONS OF OUR HOLY FATHER FRANCIS
We have to stop right here and pay attention to what was happening at the time. For the first time in Church history, the term “transubstantiation” was used at the Lateran Council, at which Francis was present. Francis is speaking to this. He is driving home the point that the bread and wine actually becomes the Body of Blood of Christ. He leans on the scriptures to remind us that those who see the Eucharist, actually see Christ in his glorified body.
In like manner, all those who behold the Sacrament of the Body of Christ which is sanctified by the word of the Lord upon the altar by the hands of the priest in the form of bread and wine, and who do not see and believe according to the Spirit and Divinity that It is really the most holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, are condemned,
Here, he is speaking to Catholics, not to non-Catholics. He never applied this rule to the Muslims or to the Jews in his missionary travels nor allowed his brothers to do so when he sent them to take over the Custody of the Holy Land. It was the Catholics of his time that were calling into question transubstantiation. Jews, Muslims and pagans were not involved in this debate. They were not Christians; therefore, they didn’t even understand the debate, other than to know that Catholics wanted to change bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. To them, this was just Catholic superstition, because they did not know the theology behind it and the revealed truths concerning the Eucharist. Catholics, on the other hand, new the Tradition. Francis pronounces an anathema directed at those who having been raised in the truth faith concerning the Eucharist rejected it. Do not use this against non Catholics, because it does not work. Francis was not speaking to them, not did he communicate the truth about the Eucharist to them through anathemas. He led them to it beginning by presence. He first got the non-believer to accept the presence of his brothers and things moved forward from there.

The Lord Jesus said to His disciples: "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No man cometh to the Father, but by Me. If you had known Me you would, without doubt, have known My Father also: and from henceforth you shall know Him, and you have seen Him.
This is extremely important. Francis is setting up the stage to present his own theology of the Trinity, which is grounded in scripture. He is pointing to the fact that the Father is present where ever we find the Son, because they are consubstantial. To know the divinity of the son is to know the divinity of the Father. While they are different and autonomous persons, they are one divine substance. To share in the Eucharist is to share in the humanity of the son and in the divinity of the God-head. This is where Francis is leading.

The first sentence is also very telling. Unlike us today, Francis did not use this statement to proselytize to non Christians. As I said above, his approach to non-Christians must very much like that of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. It was very fraternal. Francis sees and hears a whole other level of truth in the statement “No man comes to the Father but through me.”

We know this from several sources: his rule, his conversations with brothers and laity, which were later recorded by other writers, the way that he did things, his manner of prayer and the spirit that he preached to the laity of his time. Francis was the Trinitarian man. The ultimate goal of the journey was to reach the Father. If we look at his prayers, he rarely mentions Jesus. He uses Lord and Father more frequently. He acknowledges that it is Christ who leads all men to the Father. He is not saying that those who do not believe in Christ will be left behind.

Francis understood that Christ wants to lead all men to the Father and that in some mysterious way, he will do so. No one can get to the Father without Christ’s assistance. Therefore, those who know this are bound to respond to Christ with great love and gratitude for the what he does for us. Obviously, it is human to share with others when we come to know something that is life-changing. The believer, has a duty to share his treasure with those who do not know it. Francis’ approach is very different from the “thumpers” who want to bash others over the head because they don’t accept Christ as Savior. Francis realizes that discovering Christ is like the man who has lost his way home and finally finds the path that will take him home. He rejoices and he tries to say on the past; but he also tells everyone else about the path, they can too can get home. This telling took the shape of a fraternal sharing.

You did not come to the other person as one who is above. You come as one who is beneath. This was Francis’ great insistence on humility. The person whom you were inviting to walk the path was always above you. You were his servant. Just a servant makes things right for the master, the Catholic makes things right for the non-believer. We see this in the way that Francis taught this admonition, not the way that he wrote it. The writing is making a statement. But behind the statement there is context and application. There is also a whole methodology that Francis used to teach this to others. He used different methods for Catholics and non-Catholics. He was brutal with Catholics, as well he should be. He was patient and non-confrontational with non-Catholics.

There is much more to this, but this is not a book. 😃

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

ST. BONAVENTURE OF BAGNOREGIO
Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, &
Doctor of the Universal Church
This is a very interesting part of Church history. Even though Bonaventure was a bishop and a cardinal, he never really executed either office. At the time that he was named a bishop he was elected the Minister General of the order. The brothers commanded him to leave Paris, where he was working with Aquinas on the Summa and not to return to his diocese, but to go on retreat and write the definitive biography of St. Francis. Bonaventure obeyed. He dedicated his life, until he died, to the affairs of the order. It seems that he was an absentee bishop. He would come and go between the diocese and the friars.

This has not changed to this day. Franciscans who are bishops remain very active in the life of their community. The difference today is that we have Internet, email, telephone, cars, planes and other ways of multi-tasking, that Bonaventure did not have.
THE JOURNEY OF THE MIND INTO GOD
In the beginning the First Principle, from whom all other illuminations descend as from the Father of lights, by whom is every best gift and every perfect gift, that is the Eternal Father, I do invoke through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, **with the intercession of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the same Mother of Our God and Lord Jesus Christ, and of blessed Francis, **our leader and father, to grant that the eyes of our mind (be) illumined to direct our feet in the way of His peace, which exceeds every sense; which peace Our Lord Jesus Christ has proclaimed and has given;
This is something that Franciscans have been commanded to introduce into the spirituality of the laity where ever we are. Every prayer is prayed with the Blessed Mother and Francis. If you belong to a Franciscan run parish, attend a school run by Franciscans, you will always pray with the Blessed Mother and St. Francis.

St. Bonaventure introduced this at Paris when he was professor there
** the renewer of whose preaching was our Father Francis**, announcing at the beginning and end of all his preaching peace, in every salutation choosing peace, in every contemplation longing towards ecstatic peace, as a citizen of that Jerusalem, concerning which that man of peace speaks, who with those who hate peace, was peaceable: Ask for those things which are for the peace of Jerusalem.
This is an important statement. Bonaventure is setting up the groundwork for his writing. He introduces something new into Catholic Tradition. Francis of Assisi is the “renewer”. He renews Christ’s preaching. Francis does not teach anything new. What he does for the Church is to preach what Christ preached in the manner that Christ preached it, through word, deed and thought.

Bonaventure is telling us that he’s about to show is what Christ says about the spiritual life, through the one person who said it best, Francis of Assisi.

It’s very funny, because this morning I attended mass at the local parish. The friars there are Trinitarians, founded by St. John de Matha around the time that Francis was born. However, John de Matha lived long enough to meet Francis and to host him. There is wonderful piece of history among the Trinitarians that John de Matha washed Francis’ feet when our Holy Father went to Rome to seek the approval of his rule in 1209.

At mass this morning, the Trinnitarians were referring to the Holy Father Francis. The Dominicans also refer to the Holy Father Francis as do the Servites. These great religious families saw in Francis was Bonaventure is going to tell us in this work. They saw how Christ used him to speak in a way that he had never used anyone before.

As you proceed into the great work, you’re entering into Francis’ journey, which is being presented as the prototype for the journey of all souls to God. Obviously, each soul brings with it its personality, context, experiences, needs and desires, etc. But the Truths that are found along thsi journey do not change What made Francis different is that he allowed his brothers to see, whereas other mystiques were very private and had to be coerced to write.

Francis, on the other hand, wrote little, but shared much and his sons and daugtters wrote what he shared.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Many times my mother would make me play in the yard. We also had great deference towards company. Here it is difficult to know if we are in the courtyard of Holy, Mother, Teacher: or if we have company. I would not quench the slightest ember.

I used to own a small blue booklet. In it, on the path of the Joyous mysteries, he( Bonaventure) wrote something like…’ like Mary we each can conceive Jesus in our hearts. like Mary we can make him through the desert to our cousin, like Mary we can…'Anyone know where this is from?
