Although I am quite sure that my vocation is OP and nothing else, I am still interested in all orders, strange being that I am 😉

Yesterday, a question popped into my head:
The Carthusians live a life which has muc emphasis on life alone in one’s “cell” (if you can call their little houses that!) while other orders put more emphasis on the communal life.

So, are there others orders who are nearly “recluses” (right word?).

basically, I am asking your communieties that are somewhere between the Carthusian lifestyle and the lifestyle of OSB or similar.

I hope you understand what I am asking, my English is failing me today…

The Camaldolese, which is an offshoot of the Benedictines, is probably the closest in manner of life:

Brothers and Sisters of Bethlehem. They are like the Carthusians in many ways. Their liturgy is different a little and they have the Eucharist in their hermitages!

Yes, the Carthusians are nearly recluses, but Sr. Wendy of art fame is the only one I really know of.

The eremetical way of life is what you’re talking about, which includes the Carthusians; Camaldolese; and Monastics of Bethlehem. A new community for women is emerging in our diocese–the Eremetics of St. Augustine. I had a conference with their foundress, a canon lawyer, a couple of weeks ago.

Our Cloisterites will be starting as hermits in their private homes. Then, when we get the monastery built, they will come to live there.

The cenobitic way of life is what’s lived in monasteries. The Camaldolese usually have it both ways.

Then, of course, there’s diocesan hermit, according to canon 603.

I have a list of hermitages on my website:

Dear Cloisters: I am writing a book on new religious communities in the Church. The Eremetics of St. Augustine have as an address Wadesboro, NC. Do you know if this is correct? I have written to them for more information about their community, but have had no response. Thanx!

I cannot answer for her. I receive Christmas e-cards from her, but other than that I honor her eremitism.

Generally speaking, though, eremitics have the right to set up as a non-profit organization, with a view of being able to receive alms. They have to do this with a plural name, and this often leads to confusion. They are also permitted to found new communities.

Our Cloisterite Hermits are Carthusian with Reparatrix spirituality. While we have adapted the Carthusian statutes to our own Plan of Life, the hermits, like the Carthusians are permitted to follow the spirituality which brings them closer to God. One follows Passionist, two others follow Carmelite, etc.

If interested in our proposed/emerging charisms, here is our Cloister Outreach Affiliate New Foundations site: cloisters.tripod.com/conf/

My local bishop has all of my links. I just sent the annual report.

Here is our main site: cloisters.tripod.com/

Follow the “Fullerton Society” link to find other emerging charisms not of our founding.

Cloisters
