Hi,

Missed my usual parish this week and attended another local Mass.

Ended up being a bit more contemporary than I prefer.

The one thing that struck me most was the Agnus Dei which was different! Never heard it like, “Lamb of God… Bread of Life… Prince of Peace…”

Is this acceptable? Seriously I had NEVER heard this before EVER!

The older I get the more I regret Vatican 2! …sigh…

Edit!

As I reflect there were several disturbing occurrences. Another was the priest truncating the Gospel while there was no formal note of ability to do so in the Missal. Older guy but just seemed to be a little too groovy for Mass!

What you describe was common prior to the 2011 revision to the Missal translation in English. In the 2011 translation revision, the rule was restated more firmly that only the original Latin text was to be used as translated and no additions.

I find your comment about regretting Vatican II interesting. Were you an active participant at the council? If not, what do you personally have to regret?

As for the Gospel reading, I can’t comment definitively because I do not have my Missal in front of me, and the USCCB website does not specify, but that Gospel reading does commonly have a short form and long form.

Gee,

I’m the first to lament some of the major changes in the Mass since then? I kinda thought others may have noticed too! 😃

No I was not around those halls at the time but often ponder the whole sale changes that occurred. Heck they changed the calendar! Why?

Anyway I wager there were less “groovy Mass” pre V2 than after. if you travel a I do you’ll soon learn there is a wide variety of approaches and the fact some parishes get so “customized” is jarring to visitors.
