When a parish says they offer a Traditional Mass and “Contemporary” one, what does “Contemporary” mean? Is it simply a matter of more modern hymns/music?

That pretty much sums it up.

I read that differently. A traditional Mass is normally referred to as the Extraordinary Form or EF while a contempoary Mass would be the Ordinary Form or OF. The OF is only 40+ years old while the EF goes back hundreds of years.

I suppose one could limit the definition to the music end of it only but the prayers between the two forms are very different.

Just my observation.

I have a feeling a “contemporary” mass is going to be closer to a Protestant service.

I think, either they mean that one Mass is the TLM and another is the NO, or they mean that both are the NO but one has traditional music, and the other contemporary…

I would think it’s the English OF. I’m surprised the bishop would allow this kind of sign in front of one of his churches, if there is such a sign.

No, there isn’t any sign. It’s mentioned in the parish bulletin.

There isn’t a High Mass offered, so when it says Traditional and Ordinary, they are both Novus Ordo.

Sounds horrible. I coverted to Catholicism to get away from Protestant style services…Thank God my parish uses an organ and sings traditional hymns…

But I’ve been to quite a few organ recitals where they even sing traditional hymns in Protestant churches. From what I saw, I can’t even say they were irreverent.

A Traditional Novus Ordo? :hmmm:

Here is an example of a contemporary Catholic mass.

If you look carefully, you will see clapping, drums, guitars etc.

I think a contemporary mass is likely to be charasmatic; therefore, close to some of the Protestant services I am used to.

The full truth is that the age difference between the 1962 and 1970 Mass is only eight years, and the definite and required difference between the two is only:
  • omission of psalm 42
  • change in the lectionary
  • change in the offertory prayer
  • acclamation after the consecration
  • modified communion and conclusion rite
The new form can be celebrated in traditional way, and many people would not sense the difference from the previous form.

I stand corrected…

Bleh! Did you read the captions in that video? The only thing that looks Catholic in this Mass is the actual Mass part. It just screams “Wannabe Protestants, but, gosh darnit, we still have this Mass part we have to fit in somewhere.”

I think that Mass should have a “Danger Warning” sign out front warning Catholics not to enter.

The only thing that looks Catholic in this Mass is the actual Mass part.
If the actual life of our Lord would closely resemble the Messianic expectations of the Jews of that time, then all would follow Him. He had just a few women and a very young men behind Him on the day when He was judged. Was His life Catholic = for everyone? Should a faithful Jew follow Him?

I do not say that the contemporary Mass with guitars drums, pianos, applauses, theatrical performances is good, and we want that. I only say, that we had o be very careful with categorical judgments, because we can miss our time, as the Jews did. We shall listen to the Magisterium.

They’re referring to it as a “new Mass” in comparision to a more traditional NO. The only “new Mass” is the “Novus Ordo” and it’s not a "new Mass, but a new order of Mass. To be calling this contemporary Mass a “new Mass” in such circumstances is gravely incorrect and gravely misleading. These different Masses (ie: contemporary Masses, Jazz Masses, Polka Masses, etc) have been strongly discouraged. In the Latin Rite there are two forms of Mass, the Novus Ordo, and the Tridentine Mass; we don’t have all these different Masses.

The differences between the 1962 Missale and the 1570 Missale are in fact relatively minor.

The differences between the 1970 Mass and both of the other Missales go way beyond what you pointed out above and although you make them sound very minor above, they include at least the following in addition to what you listed:

-A different Confiteor and removal of the prayers after the Confiteor.
-Omission of the Psalm at the Lavabo and other Offertory prayers
-Addition of several new Prefaces and Canons
  • Removal of several prayers in the Communion rite
    -Removal of the Last Gospel.
-Abandonment of many genuflections, bows, and the recitation of the Gloria Patri at several parts of the Mass.
In reality the limits of the “definite and required differences” are rarely seen by the typical Catholic.
Just scratching the surface these changes realistically include:
-The replacement of the Propers (Introit, Offertory and Communion) with hymns.
-In many places the near total abandonment of traditionally Catholic sacred music.
-The adoption of a large amount of traditionally Protestant music into the Mass.
-The adoption of pop music into the mass, quite a bit of which is composed by defrocked padres and Protestants.
  • In many places the replacement of the traditional organ with secular instruments.
  • In many places the replacement of the choir in the choir loft with “music ministers” performing up front on the stage often accompanied by clapping
  • The adoption of the Protestant practice of Communion in the hand while standing facilitated by the vandalizing of Catholic Communion rails to make the traditionally Catholic practice of kneeling for Communion impractical.

That’s an odd reason to become Catholic, just to get away from a protestant-type service. I understand that liturgy is important for worship in a group setting, but the liturgy itself is not God.

If the protestant church had beautiful and uplifting organ music and traditional hymms were sung reverently, and everyone was utterly self-conscious with their actions and felt the approving gazes of their neighbors and they themselves were not suffering from the temptations to look around at what other people were doing, and if the church passed out cookies and grape juice, would that have been better, you suppose, than a guitar and singing The Lord of the Dance in the real presence of God?
