Hi all, in a thread I posted two months ago, I had a Friend who defied her father and continued playing video games even when they told her not to. It’s come to a point whereby the parents are no longer trying to stop her from playing. Would it be sinful to play video games with her if this is the case? Her father forbid her from playing until she moved out which Is like 4-5 years time (she’s still a teen)

I did some personal discernment into this and this is what I’ve come up with:

It’s sinful because:
• She defied her father and it would be wrong to play with her

It’s not sinful because:
• Her parents aren’t trying to stop her anymore so it wouldn’t be sinful (?)

From a personal point of view, I think it would be okay to play video games with her, I’m not condoning her action of defying her parents but just spending some time with a Friend. Otherwise, if it would count as partaking in her sin by playing video games with her, it means that I wouldn’t be able to join her until 4-5 years later which is a long time and she’s been one of my main buddies to game with.

Would like to hear your thoughts on this, thank you and God bless 🙂

Parental decrees can be rescinded…this one was…just let your friend win once in a while!

Just because the parents are not trying to stop her from playing the games anymore does not make her defiance OK. They are probably recognizing that video games can be akin to an addiction and it is very hard to overcome addictions. It is the unrecognized narcotic of this modern technical age and to a high degree it is escapism from reality.
There is nothing wrong with playing games on occasion, but when it overtakes your life and social well being there is a problem.
I think you would do well to steer clear of playing videos games with her as it is still an encouragement-acceptance-tolerance-of her defiance of her parents wishes. I will guess that the parents are just silent as they may be hoping that she will alter her habits as she grows older and more mature. And what about you? How much are you influenced by video games? Just wondering… Peace.

It may not be sinful, but it also might not be a good idea. I’m assuming that her dad told her to stop playing video games because she’s playing them excessively.

Playing video games once in a while is fine, as long as it doesn’t become an obsession or crowd out everything else in your life. If she’s neglecting things like work, school, church, her social life, her physical health, etc. it’s a good sign she needs to get it under control.

Thanks all :),

For now I came to the conclusion that it wouldn’t be right to play with her until her parents lift the restriction. However, there’s one more issue I want to address, if my friend is playing with a group of other friends, and that group of friends invites me to join them in a game while the friend (the one I’m referring to in this thread) is playing with them too, am I allowed to join them or am I not? (Since she’s in the group too)
