Please take this in the spirit it is given, I suspect that though you mean well, you haven’t been properly informed. Aspergers syndrome is not a mental disease, and as someone who has Aspergers, I am not mentally ill. It does not belong listed as such and is in no way related to them! Aspergers is anAutism Spectrum Disorder, unlike typical Autism, people with Aspergers are high functioning. Many have higher than average IQ’s. People with classic Autism have far more problems than us Aspies do, but you don’t include them on this list. While some mental disorders are co-morbid with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders are not ‘mental diseases’. Autism Spectrum Disorders are Developmental Disorders, as is Down Syndrome. People with Autism have social and emotional difficulties because our brains are wired differently, we don’t have a mental disease but a social disorder because we don’t recognize social cues that come naturally to you Neurotypicals.Loving God,
Please hear the persistent prayers and petitions of your loving children in this intention. Please bless and have mercy on all your people suffering from all sorts of mental diseases, and especially depression, panic/anxiety attacks, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ocd, Aspergers syndrome, Alzheimers, and related maladies.
I’m not opposed to the offer of prayer, I’m opposed to the incorrect placement of Aspergers in a list of true mental disorders. Why not include those with Developmental Disorders, and add them separately after the mental ones? Example: Please bless and have mercy on all your people suffering from all sorts of mental diseases, and especially depression, panic/anxiety attacks, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ocd, Alzheimers, and related maladies Please also bless and have mercy on all your people suffering from developmental disorders such as Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, Down Syndrome and related maladies. That way you may still pray for Aspergers, and include those who have Classic (Kanner) Autism and Down Syndrome as well. Unlike mental disorders, developmental disorders can not be treated with medications or therapy. There is no specified treatment for them; when medication and therapy are used, it is to treat co-morbid conditions that are typically are mental and/or emotional.
I just prefer to not be labelled as something I’m not, as my brain happens to be wired differently. My inability to grasp Neurotypical behavior and social cues is not due to a mental illness, I just didn’t develop the way Neurotypicals do.
