Having killed 200 in raging fires that swept towards towns by strong winds, forest fires have continued to burn in various parts of the state of Victoria, despite the continuing efforts of firefighters and helicopter water-bombers. Eucalyptus trees and drought-dry countryside isn’t a good combination. Periodically during the past three weeks, towns and properties have been temporarily evacuated.
My daughter-in-law and family evacuated their home today, and my son will do so in a few hours as tomorrow will be no less a fire danger than what we now call “Black Saturday” the day when those people died. Fires were put out near my son and daughter-in- law’s home yesterday, but if fire flared up again in their area, with winds at 140 kilometers an hour (around 90 miles an hour) there’s no way their forested-hillside home can be saved.
The winds will become gale-force again later tomorrow, and the helicopters may not be able to take off to water bomb the fires.
May I ask prayer that the State of Victoria will soon have rain heavy enough to douse the fires. Rain has its problems as where the catchment areas have been burned out, some town and city water supplies are threatened with polution, but in the meantime people and property face threat, and the Lord only knows how much of our wildlife have been wiped out.
Lord have mercy.
Thank you for your generous prayers.
