What is the Islamic teaching regarding the use of contraception? Also, what is the Islamic view on masturbation and other sexual practices which are not open to the possibility of creating human life?

There is, regarding the first question, a difference of opinion. The answer depends on whether matters are temporary or permanent and the reason for use. For example–to protect the health of the mother, definitely allowed. As a non-health-related permanent measure against pregnancy without consent of both spouses, definitely not allowed.

Regarding masturbation, not allowed (as far as I’m aware).

Other “sexual practices,” are generally permissible provided they are between a married couple. They do not have to have the possibility of creating human life. (I.e., it can be just for enjoyment and not procreation.) However, anal intercourse is not allowed, ever.

Is the non-medicinal use of contraception generally frowned upon? Is contraception commonly used in the Islamic world?

Hello and Assalaamu’alaykum,

Islam teaches that no matter what one does to think they can stop Allah from creating, it can never happen.

Contraceptives can be used in/for medicinal purposes, pains, menses, symptoms, etc. It can also postpone menstruation for a time if one is thinking on going to Hajj (agreed upon by the foawqaha). But one is not to use it for the purpose of trying to ward off pregnancy as a mean for getting pregnant. One may use it for serious issues in medical terms. But one cannot say this protects one from getting pregnant for only Allah is the Creator and no one can stop Him from creating.

For masturbation, this is forbidden in Islam. One is to keep oneself away from such dirty habits. When one has the urge or pressure is abundant, it is advised to fast…for fasting kills the urge after a time.

Thank you Americanrevert. It appears that Catholicism and Islam possess similar positions concerning contraception and masturbation. I find it interesting that contraception is not to be used in order to deliberately prevent conception. Islam seems to view contraception as more of a medical aid to cure illness or prevent pain.

I am impressed by the fact that Islam considers masturbation to be sinful. I was under the impression that Catholicism was the only religion that held this view. Protestant Christians generally have no problem with this practice, and so I assumed that most other religions would also consider it permissable.

Who cares what the Mahometan view on anything is, since it starts from a premise of total error?

I believe Islam contains elements of truth, and I believe they worship the God of Abraham; although their knowledge is obsured by the fact that they also believe in many falsehoods and lies.

However, putting my personal feelings aside, I believe it is important that we learn about other religions and faiths. Ignorance results in hatred and segregation. Religion has caused too many wars. We need to foster mutual understanding and respect in order to eliminate hatred, ignorance, bigotry, and war. This is why I am interested in learning about Islam.

Thank you Dempsey for being honest. Many people are just disgusting in their words and tongue. They speak without thinking and their intent is hurtful and damaging to the other person. Those who do this are ignorant and arrogant. When someone doesn’t agree with another’s belief or religion, then it is only proper to ask politely without accusing or assuming. Those that do the opposite are not exactly the people you should be confronting. There is noting wrong with being polite and generous and those that do, you will find others doing it right back :).

But Islam again, is not based on error, it is based on truth. You can have your own opinions bpb, but no matter what you accuse or assume, attack or put out there, you can in no way challenge God.
Muslims perhaps, but not God.
