Contraception/Picking and choosing

Hi all,

On another discussion board I’ve been having an argument with someone about contraception. IT started out as questionning “cafetaria catholics”, who choose what they want to believe. Someone brought up how they didn’t believe in contraception. I have been arguing with her ever since. That it is a major teaching, it isn’t up for debate (and in doing so would cause the sin of scandal). Her reasoning is that the church is merely made up of men who make mistakes and with contraception they are wrong, and that Pope Paul VI overturned a vote that favoured contraception and then made his own teaching. she goes on to say we must be free to openly disagree with the magisterium, free speech, etc etc. I have tried my best to argue. Heirarchy of Church is there for a reason, Apostolic succession means you have no place to argue, sin of scandal, just being totally wrong on thinking contraception is okay, etc.

Any help in the matter??

Sometime in the 1930s the other major Protestant faiths allowed contraception to be used in limit circumstances - primarily in marriage. So for almost 2000 years contraception was against the standard of faith for all Christian sects. Now, look at the churches that have allowed contraception? They’re a Hoover mess.

The Catholic Church, in case people haven’t noticed, doesn’t sway to cater to public opinion, it is God’s Chruch on Earth and the teachings against contraception are numerous and correct.

If people dont’ like that, well, tough, the truth is hardly popular.
 
Agreed. The person then cites “mistakes” the Church has made, saying that unless we speak out then nothing changes and that contraception teachings don’t make sense. I said that reasoning from the start isn’t good. To change the teaching to suit yourself. Man, I just don’t know how to get through to this person. I mean, in the past, speaking out so publically against a teaching like this would’ve been grounds for excommunication I’m sure.

Well, why does she think that ill thought towards contraception by the Catholic Church is wrong?

Perhaps direct her to Theology of the Body. If she’s truly wants to “speak out” she needs to be well informed of all the facts, otherwise she just makes herself look ignorant, and in discussion with people who are in the know, they will loose any respect for her “credibility” in the matter. Pointing this out to her will show her that you care for her reputation in the debate.

Subsquently, there are many a study and facts as to why contraception is bad news for a marriage, and dependign where you read 50 - 75% of abortions are due to contraceptive failure. 17% of women who are aborting report that they used their contraception perfectly as described (Guttmacher Inst.)

Others here have cited that marriages where NFP is used are less likely to end in divorce.

Not to mention, you know, God makes it pretty gosh darn clear that He’s no fan of contraception.

Man may make mistakes, plenty of them in fact. God doesn’t.
