Consider, for example, the words of Mohandas Gandhi:
There is hope for a decent life only so long as the sexual act is definitely related to the conception of precious life.
Or listen to Sigmund Freud:
Moreover, it is a characteristic common to all perversions that in them reproduction is put aside as an aim. This is actually the criterion by which we judge whether a sexual activity is perverse-- if it departs from reproduction as its aim and pursues the attainment of gratification independently.
I try to be a good Catholic but I disagree on the contraction issue, not so much for Catholics but for the world in general.
Condom use can help stop AIDS that is proven scientifically no matter what a few random scientist say. We have millions of innocent people dying right now in Africa, more than are aborted in America that could be stopped or drastically reduced… we are doing nothing.
The Theological arguments to me do not really make sense and are reaching IMHO. There are few things I disagree with the Church on… and I disagree with no major Theological points, this is pretty much the only one and I personally believe it will change in my lifetime.
Perhaps I’m wrong… I pray that I continue to gain greater understanding but I would rather see pregnancy and STD prevention than a young mother aborting a child or contracting a life threatening illness because of a single mistake. Perhaps I’m silly that way but…
The bottom line for me is that not everyone is Catholic, part of being American is not forcing our religious views on others. Abortion is outside of that because it’s not a religious view IMHO it’s murder. Contraception use is not murder… although I believe certain BCPs are making couples infertile and the Gov need to share more information… it’s still not murder like abortion. It’s a religious argument only.
I also know many people who have had wonderful and happy life long marraiges using ABC the entire time. They don’t USE each other they love each other… one spouse can use the other even using NFP or anything else on multiple levels.
Sorry for the rant… I just believe people are dying in places or abortion children and we seem to be part of the problem rather than the solution.
Yes, I know and I agree with most of what you said… As the Pope said, that is the REAL way we can stop this but we are fighting hundreds of years of ignorance and superstition where men rape young women because they believe it will cure the disease. The men are doing that because it IS their tradition and culture. They are being told not by Doctors but by witchdoctors etc…jwashu, much more progress could be made in stopping AIDS in Africa if African men would be faithful to their wives and stop using prostitutes. I don’t understand why so many Africans are willing to violate their cultural traditions and get circumcised when their tribe has never done that, because some ill-educated doctor told them it will protect them from AIDS, but they can’t make rational changes in their behaviors. These men would rather cut off part of their penis than just restrain themselves sexually? And we are supposed to support that mentality by encouraging condoms?
I’m sorry, but many of these men are making the CHOICE to get AIDS because they refuse to restrain themselves at all. The women, who have no power to say no, whom they infect, and the children born with AIDS because of that, are the only real victims.
Michael, will do, thanks!I also invite you to take a look at a post I am about to make about Contraception, Elephants and South Africa. It’s an interesting story that hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves, imo.
- Read about Uganda - an African country where they put abstinence/chastity education into place: [World’s Most Successful AIDS Prevention Programme in Uganda “Sabotaged” by Western “Experts”](World’s Most Successful AIDS Prevention Programme in Uganda “Sabotaged” by Western “Experts”)
- No one I know disputes that a condom gives some level of protection in a specific instance compared to nothing. The problem is that this level of protection is greatly over-stated to the populace, which results in a false sense of security. This naturally leads to increased sexual promiscuity. THIS then results in more cases of AIDS.
- According to Planned Parenthood’s research arm, Alan Guttmacher, 54% of those seeking abortions used contraception in the month they became pregnant.
- At least in the case of “The Pill”, contraception may in fact be murder. The Pill works two ways: first but preventing ovulation. But if that fails and there is a “break-through” ovulation, it works by preventing the very young human life from implanting in its mother’s uterus – causing an early chemical abortion.
- The Church fully recognizes and acknowledges that NFP can be abused. But it can also be used morally. The same is not true of contraception. Simply because two people agree to use one another solely for pleasure does not change the fact that this is what they are doing. If even Sigmund Freud (who was no sexual prude!) understood that the pursuit of sex solely for pleasure, divorced from procreative ends, is perverse; then it is society as a whole, and not the Church that is deeply, deeply confused.
Praise God for your 4 blessings! That’s wonderful. Sadly, I have several friends who were not so fortunate after having used “The Pill” for years.Michael, will do, thanks!
Yes I’m aware of what some BCP do, we took that for years as protestants, I’m certain it was one of the reasons we were almost childless. (we now have 4 wonderful blessing BTW)
Joe
I’m sorry I forgot to address this point you made, Joe. I’m not sure what you mean here, specifically. Because the theological argument against contraception makes perfect sense to me.The Theological arguments to me do not really make sense and are reaching IMHO.
