I know this may sound naive but why is contraception seen as being wrong? Where did the idea that it was a sin originate from?

Thanks, Nabroc

Nabroc, this issue isn’t an easy one, and thefore it wouldn’t do the issue justice nor you any justice to give sentenced answers or even a few paragraphs.

I suggest you read through this website:
theologyofthebody.net/

There are many other resources that explain the catholic teaching on sexuality and contraception.

catholicplanet.com/articles/article01.htm

Is another one that briefly scratches the surface of this, perhaps it can be a start.

Also contraception is a rather generic term, many contraceptives are infact abortifacients, that means they can cause an abortion even if it’s unintentional, and has been the case when the pill first came out, even though it was unknown to many people who took the pill first. Besides that, many contraceptives also have side effects. I hope others can further assist you in this.

God Bless

It goes against everything God intended for the act of sex within marriage and completely distorts it. Read the links.

This is one of the key documents relating to this doctrine. I know this is a hard teaching to accept, but it is true nontheless.

I see you are from England. Unfortunately, most Catholics in England disagree with the Church teaching on contraception. I used to be one of them. However, they don’t agree with the teaching simply because they don’t understand it. If you take the time to learn about the reasons for the ban, you will come to see the great truth and wisdom in the Church’s teaching.

Where does it come from? Ancient history. Catholic teaching on conctraception is older than catholicism.

What is new, novel, and extraordinary is the idea that contraception is OK. That idea is only about 100 years old in christian circles.

Notice anything unique about human sexual behavior in the last hundred years compared to before that? Correlation doesn’t prove causation, but it makes for pretty good suspects!

Please read the links people have given you. I used to be in favor of contraception, until I discovered the great love behind the Church’s teaching.
