We are still planning to go with this group and will apply the method, we have been told by people in our families (most of whom are Catholic) and a seminar we went to that it is almost always effective,
I suggest you learn Creighton or Billings. Sympto-Thermal is certainly another good option, but temperature taking requires taking it at the same time every day and I’m not sure conditions will be right for that. Creighton and Billings seem more likely to fit the lifestyle you will be embracing.
and all I can say is they better damn be right.
Wow. This is how you respond to God’s gift of a child? Seriously?
We will trust God that He will prevent us from having a child and let us serve with the group we want to go with, if not, we will interpret that either a) it was not His will that we go to serve Him in the circumstances we want to serve Him in or b) the ‘effectiveness’ of NFP is bs.
Sounds like someone is in SERIOUS need of an attitude adjustment.

I am against cocs not because I am a Catholic but because there is a chance that a baby could be killed.
Sorry I guess I misread what you meant here- i thought you were saying you are Catholic.

*If you are not Catholic then why ask in a Catholic forum? It seems to me after reading your reply to my post and several others that you do not wish to follow God and the Bible as you say ,but rather that you want some kind of pat on the back and justification to go a head and do what you have already planned to do. *
Hi Maryam,

I am not a Catholic, I don`t think I said that I am anywhere in the post, if I did though I apologize for the confusion.

The scripture about a person spilling his own seed was in reference to Onan, who was told by Judah to get his brothers` wife pregnant and then did the opposite. It is not a command to everyone. *Who says it is not? By this standard of yours then taking up one’s cross and following Jesus is not a command for everyone either since He said it specifically to the rich young man. *

Genesis 38:9-10
Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. 10 And what he did was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death also.* If it is such a serious duty for a man’s to raise up offspring that even after his death his brother is required to raise up offspring for his brother by laying with his sister-in-law, then clearly this scripture shows that this is one of the primary purposes of marriage. Hence the Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage and children. *

I talked to my wife about the health risks for her. The abortifacient is for me the biggest issue because unlike her, the fertilized sperm has no choice.

In 1 Corinthians Paul talked about husband and wife depriving each other of sex by agreement for a limited time, for prayer and fasting. This would not mean several years. Who says this would not mean several years? How do you know if “for a limited time” means 1 hour , 1 day, 1 month or 1 year? Besides the only reason Paul says they should come together is because he knows they are week and would otherwise commit some form of sin ( adultery, pornography etc) so it is kind of like when Moses allowed the Isrealites to divorce " because of their hardheadedness" but when questioned on this Jesus told them they should not divorce except in cases of infidelity.
So essentially you agree with Paul and say that you could not be celibate with out sinning for 3 years. So instead you are deciding to go against God and sin now anyway. That is pretty serious my friend . I strongly suggest you do some motivation checking

1 Corinthians 7:5
5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
I really just think this whole debate is a mute point since you are not Catholic you obviously do not agree with ,or wish to follow Catholic teaching which is the authentic interpretation of God’s word and His Church and I think it is clear that the only people who will agree with you here are non Catholics.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

No, this iswhat I say to the people who say NFB is almost always guaranteed to work, and is among the most effective methods out there. If it does not, they were not being honest. If it does, they were. I’d tell the same thing to a contraceptive manufacturer. I would thank God for our child and put our original plans on hold and serve Him in another field that would be more appropriate for a family.
Sounds like someone is in SERIOUS need of an attitude adjustment.
Maybe. I’m just holding the NFB promoters to the same standard I’d hold any other promoter of contraceptive ideas/products.

God bless.

Maybe you’re right, this probably isn’t the best forum for non-Catholics to promote their views. I asked for prayer and advice and got a lot of that, thank you and to everyone else who did likewise. Staying on here to debate with others is probably a waste of time and divides believers. I follow God and so do you, we believe in the same Saviour and Lord who died on the cross for us, and everyone here wants to follow Him, so there is no point arguing anymore. Probably won’t be on here again, it was interesting though.

I wish you and everyone else here all the best. God bless.

Well, we talked about it again. We have after a lot of difficult discussions and prayer decided to go with NFP. While she believes the risks of the pill are minimal and I don’t think there is as much proof as some say there is that it may cause as much harm as it is alleged to, we decided it still isn’t a risk we are willing to take.

Thanks for your prayers those who prayed.
Well I guess I didn’t see this before I posted my last. I am glad you are open to NFP. As for the pill’s health side effects …are you seriously saying you disagree with scientific studies from the Mayo Clinic?
As for your quote on suburbia which you hold in such disdain. Before you judge ,consider this- if it is such a dire and Godless place then don’t you think it is a prime mission field ? Not physically dangerous perhaps but certainly in need of evangelizing - it is pagan land out here. 🙂

Meh. I said I wouldn’t be back, I broke my word. Sorry. I like forums. 🙂

Yeah, we’ve decided NFP is the best alternative. We are really praying though that it does actually work, and that we are correct in making this choice. And actually, let me add, God bless the Catholic church for its stance against abortion and contraception… many Protestants took the last one up too late and the Vatican led the way on that one. There are certainly teachings of the church that I at odds with, which is why I became a protestant, but you are right about this one.

As for moving to the suburbs… the best way for people in them who don’t get the reality of life for most of the world (and there are many in the suburbs who do care, and get it, this is not about them) or to get evangelized as you put it, is to leave them. Best way to get off the pill for most people is to stop using it. 😃

NFP is NOT contraception.

If that is how you are approaching it, then you need to really prayerfully consider approaching your marital sexuality from a different perpsective.

Or you did not use the information properly.
Believe me, we will not take chances.
NFP is NOT contraception.
Of course it is. It is a natural form that doesn’t harm the woman or child and it is praiseworthy… and hopefully effective.
If that is how you are approaching it, then you need to really prayerfully consider approaching your marital sexuality from a different perpsective.
Why? The purpose of sex is to satisfy your spouse and to procreate. Procreation can be put off until it is a good time, nothing in the Bible contradicts that. What does our marital sexuality have to do with holding the NFP promoters accountable to what they are preaching? Accountability is a good thing… for everyone.

No, it isn’t at all.

Contraception is an action taken to sterilize the marital embrace.

NFP does no such thing. NFP is information. The couple decides to hav sex or not have sex. Every time they have sexual relations, it is unaltered and they take no action to sterilize the marital embrace. NFP is used to space children and also to achieve pregnancy.

The couple prayerfully decides if they will come together in the marital embrace or not. If they choose to do so, they do so without altering or sterlizing the marital embrace. The information they gather through observation of the woman’s fertile signs tells them the best time(s) to have intercourse to achieve pregnancy and the best time(s) to have intercourse if they wish to postpone pregnancy.
The purpose of sex is to satisfy your spouse and to procreate.
Correct. And the two can never be separated. Each act of intercourse must be objectively unitive and procreative (even if subjectively infertile). Your mentality is that you are rejecting your fertility (at least from my perspective).
What does our marital sexuality have to do with holding the NFP promoters accountable to what they are preaching?
If you are treating your marital sexuality in this way, you have a very impoverished view of God’s gift of fertility.

It saddens me because God intended for it to be so much more.

I can suggest some books-- Three To Get Married by Archbishop Fulton Sheen; Holy Sex by Greg Popcak; Theology of the Body for Beginners by Christopher West, Life Giving Love by Kimberly Hahn-- for starters.

And The Bible And Birth Control by Charles Provan (not a Catholic book).

Thanks rturner76 for the advice. When you say the pill is safe, do you mean it is safe ie it will not allow eggs to fertilize (ie babies to form) and kill them? Do you have any info that shows that a COC pill does not end the life of fertilized eggs?

No but there is no proof (a medical study showing it for sure) that it does - what we do know is that the body naturally causes this to happen anyway. (again not saying it can’t happen just it is one of those things they say “could” happen or might “likely” happen - but it happens even when not using contraceptive pills) -
If you’re not ready for kids then give your wife another way that she feels she will definitely be able to avoid them -
Good Luck and God Bless.

This is the definition of contraception, according the American Heritage Dictionary

American Heritage Dictionary:
con·tra·cep·tion
(kŏn’trə-sĕp’shən)
n.
Intentional prevention of conception or impregnation through the use of various devices, agents, drugs, sexual practices, or surgical procedures.

NFP prevents impregnation or conception through sexual practices, ie when a woman is likely to be fertile and the couple do not want a baby at that time, they do not have sex. Contraception does not have to include sterilization.

I agree with every other thing you wrote.
Correct. And the two can never be separated. Each act of intercourse must be objectively unitive and procreative (even if subjectively infertile). Your mentality is that you are rejecting your fertility (at least from my perspective).
How can an act of intercourse during a time when the woman is definitely infertile be objectively procreative? Also, we are not rejecting our fertility, we are choosing to postpone it.
If you are treating your marital sexuality in this way, you have a very impoverished view of God’s gift of fertility

It saddens me because God intended for it to be so much more.
God intended sex to be to pleasure one’s spouse and to make children. He also intends us to be peacemakers and help victims of poverty and injustice. We will do our best to spend our whole lives doing these things, before and when we have children. But there are some things that it isn’t suitable (or possible) to involve children in, so because some of the work we feel called to do we want to delay having a child. We were going to do this through the use of the pill but since learning about its possible side effects and possible even if remote abortifacient qualities, we felt Him telling us we should not do this. So we will not. Using NFP has none of these risks. But we still will avoid having a child (or try to) so this other work can be done first. If it does not go that way, it is God’s will and we will accept. But we will try.
I can suggest some books-- Three To Get Married by Archbishop Fulton Sheen; Holy Sex by Greg Popcak; Theology of the Body for Beginners by Christopher West, Life Giving Love by Kimberly Hahn-- for starters.

Thanks for that, I am a bit of a slow reader but I will look for those in the library.

Thanks ryecroft. We both made the decision to do the NFP thing.

Does anyone know of any really good resources on NFP? This is a big leap of faith and we really hope it will work and want to do everything we can on our part to make sure it does.

Can I ask who here uses NFP, or knows people who do, and has succesfully avoided pregnancy with it? Who (please be honest) knows people who did it properly and it still did not work? How often does this happen?
It doesn’t work for everyone - we’ve had problems while being very conservative with it - there are many on here that swear by it, but what I would recommend when you read everyone’s reply to ‘how NFP worked for you’ (and there are threads that talk about this very subject)- well you need to ask how they define success. Some will define it (as we do) - using NFP to avoid pregnancy and not having any surprise pregnancies - others will define it as using NFP to avoid and later being thrilled that they had an ‘oops’ pregnancy (therefore viewing it as a ‘success’)- many on here use it for certain amounts of time between children and not just using it to put off having kids for X amount of years - success with NFP is very much (especially on here) in the heart of the user of it. But if you need to use NFP - learn more than one method and in my personal opinion - get the machine that will tell the female for sure what is going on with her saliva and vaginal mucous. There are no questions with the machine - it may seem like a superfluous extra but if you’re going to a war zone, you need to really determine what would truly be worse - getting pregnant in that situation or an extra thing to carry around - but please learn (if you’re going to use it) more than one method - it really gives the woman insights to what’s going on with her body - some people make it sound like "it kills the spontaneity (but unless you’re active in the early morning - not for us so much)-once you get used to it it’s automatic - but you do need (especially if temping and recommended if you use the machine) to check at the same times each morning (temping this is a rule)- also if you do use the machine (or even condoms) you need to look at the rules of the country you’re going to - find out if you aren’t supposed to have them there - that can cause you a lot of trouble - in some countries things aren’t just taboo they are against the law.
God Bless and Good Luck!

BTW some of us have found that there is really no 100% definite time where the woman is infertile - all signs may point to this but there are some on here who have gone by those signs (granted not a ton and there are some that this has worked for for years) - and who have wound up pregnant

Hi Ryecroft,

I really appreciate that. We define NFP success the same way. When you say NFP hasn’t worked for you, do you mean you and your husband have had an unexpected pregnancy? I think the machine is a great idea… have you used it or know anyone who has? I know there is something called Ladycomp, I have also heard it is very new though and not tested. Do you think it is effective?

I heard you can only get it in Canada, but we’d be willing to order it or make a cross-border trip. We have no problems with condoms and will be using them, as there are no health side effects and they do not harm anyone. I’m willing to assume this is also true of the machine.

So Jesus said only go out and spread the Gospel to those who are physically in danger? Pray tell what is more dangerous to a person , physical death or spiritual? He taught His Apostles to run away from people who are spiritually dying and only help those who are being physically persecuted?
I work in a christian book store that mainly serves protestants and I see people claim their ‘mission’ work in foreign lands as a badge of honor, it seems to me that it has become a thing you have to do to ‘prove’ that you really are a Christians. Yet to me your feeling about the mission field of the subrbs reminds me of the Good Samaritan parable and I ask you who is your neighbor if not your fellow Americans living in the spiritual mortuary of their rich suburbs ? We are called to be witnesses EVERYWHERE there is need of the gospel. I submit to you that infact it is fear that drives you out of the suburbs, fear that you too would loose your soul and that you are not strong enough in your faith to live there , keep your soul and be able to be a good witness bringing others to Christ. I submit to you that there are many dead souls in many feel good Churches happily checking the block in their happy little Wednesday bible Study group doing all the ‘right’ things outwardly, or wearing their Church hats. Finally some pastors are waking up and waking people up, have you read the book Not A Fan yet? Thank God for the Catholic Church the pillar and bulwark of the truth not bending to what makes the congregation ‘feel good’ or what 98% of all their members are doing wrong.
