Folks, if we’re going to call the action of the Russian Orthodox church a “sinful capitulation” (paraphrasing the comments I’ve read) then what does that say about our own Catholic Church?

Do you not realize that Catholicism teaches the same thing?

Catholics are not allowed to use artificial birth control methods for the purpose of preventing or aborting pregnancy, but they are allowed to take prescription medication normally prescribed for birth control for other medical issues. These medications still do the job they are normally used for, but what is different is the intent.

According to Paul VI Institute, those reasons are few and far between. God Bless, Memaw

I think Orthodox would agree that it is missing the mark (sin) so to speak with the Magisterium’s teaching, and is not the ideal for a Christian.
However Orthodox also have the idea of economia, that at the priest’s discretion certain things can be allowed due to the weakness of man’s hearts, or for the sake of some other thing.

That’s my 2 cents.

I’ll bet that priest is very popular. 😉

I sort of doubt that, as the spiritual direction is a private matter between a priest and spiritual child. It would be a matter of pastoral care unique to each spiritual child and not something to be preached, and thus no reason for people to know a priest’s pastoral teaching unless one was a spiritual child anyway 😉

As the Orthodox do not recognise that the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is of God’s institution as clearly instituted by Christ to teach dogma and doctrine without error, they do not have the benefit of the protection of His teaching against the feelings of their priests or bishops.

I don’t dispute they are few, that’s why the authors in all three links I provided encourage readers to seek more information from doctors to ensure they are getting the absolute best solution to their medical problem.

But those cases do exist along the same lines as the statement issued by the Russian Orthodox church. So for us as Catholics to say they have somehow “capitulated” and we have not is hypocrisy.
