But Mary Gail! Is it OK if I also order a glass of Vin Santo, in addition to having it served on Capellini D’angelo? Does that merit a dispensation? 😛

I know for a fact that a lot of herbs and spices have been used as abortifacients in the past but you need to eat a lot and they’re not as reliable as modern day drugs. … Out of principle I won’t put them in my food now and have thrown them out.
OKAY…so we can conclude that things taken in LARGE QUANTITIES are not healthy…but “out of principle”?? That I do not get.

Oxycodone is a good pain reliever for those who medically require it. It is also an abused drug by drug addicts. Following Budgie’s logic, people who are truly suffering should not take Oxycodone “out of principle”…

Dihydrogen Monoxide is very beneficial and even necessary for life. However, if it is inhaled, it is deadly. “out of principle”, this should be avoided then…

Chocolate is delicious…Hot cocoa, brownies, M&Ms, cookies, mochas…but if my dog were to eat too much, it would kill him. “Out of principle” we should never again eat another brownie…

Seriously, this is silly. Scrupulous to the utmost. Seek counseling.

I was a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan for a long time. “Scarborough Fair” is a song about doing the impossible to win back a loved one. “Tell her to make me a cambric shirt/without no seams or needlework” and etc. - those are all tasks that are impossible.

The refrain is "Are you going to Scarborough Fair/parsley sage rosemary and thyme/remember me to one who lives there/she once was a true love of mine…"and then the verses are a series of impossible tasks that “she” will have to do if he’s going to take her back.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarborough_Fair

The Simon and Garfunkel version was combined with a countermelody they called “Cantticle” which was based on the little-known Paul Simon song, The Side of a Hill. It is an anti-war song that describes the death of a 7-year-old child in war and the Canticle part is anti-war as well. It contains the phrase: “to fight for a cause/they’ve long ago forgotten.” This version of the song was released in 1966 and the anti-war reflected opposition to Vietnam.

According to what I see, the theories about what “parsley sage rosemary and thyme” mean are that they are meaningless words put in just to have herbal references that rhyme with the rest of the refrain, or they refer to a love potion, or they refer to the Black Plague.

The only really “bad” thing about the song is that Paul Simon learned the arrangement from Martin Carthy, an obscure (in the US) English folk singer and then Simon and Garfunkel used it without giving Cathy any credit or royalties. Carthy nursed a grudge for 35 years, until he and Paul Simon performed the song in 2000.

Sorry to be pedantic but that’s one of my favorite songs and this is the first thread I’ve seen where a Simon and Garfunkel song is referenced on CAF. 🙂

Here are the lyrics. The words in parentheses are from the countermelody, Canticle:

All of the tasks the singer is asking her (the former true love) to do are impossible.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they’ve long ago forgotten)
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

I still like their music although I’m not a huge fan the way I used to be b/c you can only listen to “The Sound of Silence” so many times without getting sick of it. But it takes me back to my childhood. 🙂 I was a fan of theirs in 1980 when no one else my age really cared much about them, it seemed, so I’d get excited every time a chance to discuss their music came up.

Spot on! 👍

Dihydrogen monoxide kills more people every day than spices! Do people think that chemical should be limited or eliminated?! I can guarantee that more people die from dihydrogen monoxide inhalation in a year than die from eating spiced food!
I am sorry for yet another post but I could not pass this up. 🙂

yes, by all means let’s ban dihydrogen monoxide. 😃 I worked at the US Environmental Protection Agency for 17 years and I can get a petition going.

Of course most people are more familiar with this substance using the abbreviation H2O or what ordinary people say, water. But it’s true, people drown in that stuff maybe every day somewhere in the world so you’d better be careful…
