The thread about removing teachings from the Church spawned this thread. The poll results of the other thread were interesting, to say the least, as quite a few people posted to have the ban on contraceptives removed. Granted, just because that may be the popular vote, doesn’t mean the Church is going to change her stance on the matter.
I currently don’t use them but I used to. You don’t have to vote, if you don’t want. Please be charitable as I’m looking for different perspectives. 😉

voted on that already…but why is mrs abbott reqeusting different views…is she also posting a poll for this thread?

lol . . . ya, I got distracted and it took a little bit to post.

May God be with you!

First - Contraceptiving takes God out of the picture for conception. It takes a beautiful gift of love and makes it cheap. All love has sacrafice to it. Look to the Cross where you see the ultimate sacrifice! That is why NFP is the only way to go if you want to hold off having children or space them out.

Second - Contraceptives are also abortifacients so they kill your concieved child.

God bless you.

condoms are not abortifacients…but they are a form of B.C.

In high school and part of college I was sexually active and we used contraceptives - condoms not the pill because she did not react well to chemical contraceptives. This was all before my conversion but I knew that the Church was against both our use of contraceptives and also our fornication but I did not care at that time because I felt that this was how I could express my love for this person.

After my conversion I spent time working through this objection that I had about Church teachings and reading all the works that I could about the issue. What I was able to determine was that I did not at that time have a full sense of the relationship between sex and love and in that relationship how the use of contraceptives was disordered. Since that time I have come to understand that aspect of love to a much greater degree and in that understanding it became obvious that the use of contraceptives could do nothing but harm to the love between spouses.

I voted no, for obvious reasons. God is the author of all life, and I for one know that I’m not smarter than Him. So if He decides we need a baby (like this one right here in my belly 🙂 ) then He knows what He’s doing.

I could have voted ‘used to’, but that was before I converted. I have never used any since becoming Catholic, and never will. 😃

Years ago when I was first married and away from the church I had Norplant put in. That was not fun, had a light period 3/4 of the month. And getting it removed probably worked off sometime in purgatory. Five little sticks are implanted just under the skin.

Problem in after being there a couple years tissue adheres to those little sticks and they can’t give you alot to numb it because it makes the area swell which makes it even harder to remove. Took more than an hour of extremely painful tugging to get those babies out. Probably why it fell out of popularity once people started having them removed. I also have a half inch scar on my arm to remind me of my stupidity.

After that a very short period of using condoms while I was sorting out church teaching and then we embraced NFP and have used it ever since -over 10 years now.

I used any kind of Contraception when I was a heavily lapsed Catholic determined to enjoy illicit pleasures. Now I use absolutely nothing because God holds us in the palm of His hand. If you practice Contraception you practice atheism.

DH & I have been using NFP due to serious health problems I have. Cotraceptives would harm me in a big way and interfere with my medical treatments. My husband would never put his own needs ahead of mine. We treat eachother with love and respect unlike contraception which is self centered and not reliable. Not only that, we don’t want to cause the other to sin out of our own selfishness.

On a secular level, I’d like to pass on some information. I screen pap smears for a living looking for cancer and precancerous changes. Chemical contraceptives do not stop STD’s i.e. HPV (human papilloma virus- which can lead to cervical cancer). In a recent scientific journal, a Finnish scientist stated unequivocally that the chemicals in fact make the cells in the cervix/vagina more susceptible to this virus. There is an increase in glandular atypias in recent years which many feel is due to an HPV infection. Glandular dysplasias are very difficult to detect and treat mainly because they are so hard to find on a colposcopy. Many times the disease has advanced to a stage in which there is no other alternative other than a hysterectomy. IUDs have their own set of problems, the least of which is pelvic inflammatory disease. So all in all, there is scientific evidence available out there that backs up the wisdom of Church Teaching.

Mrs. Abbott, people who make polls like the one you describe regarding changing church teaching fail to understand that church teaching on faith and morals-- called the Deposit of Faith-- cannot change.

It’s a shame they don’t understand this.

I think the poll would be a lot better if it asked why a person was not using contraceptives. In my case, the answer is no, but since I’m not married and don’t have a boyfriend, it’s not something I think about very often. I bet there are other people who could say the same thing, or they were married and on contraceptives, but divorced or were widowed, and are no longer sexually active.

We need a poll as to why people use or do not use contraceptives, in order to clarify this one. Just a thought.

I answered no, because I had a hysterectomy years ago…so it’s a non issue for me now. Not having worry about getting pregnant (at 48) is another good thing. 😃 I’m done. Bring on the grandkids (in a few years)😃

Used to, but not anymore.

When I met my DH (then boyfriend) my mom took me to the hosptial for BCP. I was maybe a week or two from turning 16yo and never been with a guy. Talk about giving me permission to have premarital sex!

We weren’t Catholics then…well, in name only.

I was on the pill 10 years until we decided to have children.
After the birth of our child, I found out what BCPs do…abortificient…and decided to never use them again.

Later I found my way home to the CC and agree 100% with the reason behind this teaching.

Believe me, it’s not easy to deal with doctors…yesterday I had an appt & my doctor wants me to have a tubal ligation…and I ONLY have three children (4th coming)!!

who wants to look to the cross when they’re bumping and grinding? When you are making love to your spouse, if you are thinking of the ultimate sacrifice, you got some serious couch time in your future.
