I need help with these:

2 Samuel 8:4 & 1 Chronicles 18:4

1 Samuel 10:18
& 1 Chronicles 19:18

2 Kings 24:8
& 2 Chronicles 36:9

2 Kings 8:26
& 2 Chronicles 22:2

2 Samuel 24:1
& 1 Chronicles 21:1

I predict you will get vastly more response if you post the verses rather than force people to look them up.

2 Samuel 8:4
And David took from him a thousand and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen, and houghed all the chariot horses: and only reserved of them for one hundred chariots.

1 Chronicles 18:4
And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen, and he houghed all the chariot horses, only a hundred chariots, which he reserved for himself.

2 Samuel 10:18
And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.

1 Chronicles 19:18
But the Syrian fled before Israel: and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and Sophach the general of the army.

2 Kings 24:8
Joachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Nohesta, the daughter of Elnathan, of Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 36:9
Joachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

2 Kings 8:26
Ochozias was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Athalia the daughter of Amri king of Israel.

2 Chronicles 22:2
Ochozias was forty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother was Athalia the daughter of Amri.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

2 Samuel 24:1
And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.

1 Chronicles 21:1
And Satan rose up against Israel: and moved David to number Israel.

So what are you looking for in these verses? The bible is not a history book and the stories told may actually differ. In fact if they were exactly a like then we might have question as to their authenticity. The bible teaches religious truths. Do you see any contradicting religious truths in these verses - I don’t.

Well the bible is to be without error, I just want to know why some verses sound alike just that some words are changed.

These are copyists mistakes. Once and while, it occurred when scriptures were recopied. The original texts were perfect but the copies had some small mistakes (human mistakes).Nothing to change the revelation.

Verses taken from Douay-Rheims Bible. So you are telling me that some human error was put into the bible which is claimed to have no error?

I would encourage you to learn Greek and Hebrew the read the original text before you make your judgement that error was put into the Bible. Or you might want to learn Latin and read the Vulgate. As to comparing English translations, there probably will be some nuaunces from one translation to the next. Sorry, no smoking gun here.

Before the intention of the paper by the Chinese (1000 A.D.) and the invention of the press by Guttenberg (1440 A.D.) how the Bible was transmitted from a generation to the next generation?

Furthermore, the original texts doesn’t exist anymore. For the Old and for the New Testament,we only have copies…

The original texts were perfect but with the help of scholars, and with around twenty-five thousands copies, we have good versions of the Bible.

You are unclear about the claims made (at least by the Catholic Church) regarding the inerrancy of Scripture. From the catechism:

107 The inspired books teach the truth. “Since therefore all that the inspired authors or sacred writers affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scriptures.”

God was not concerned with letting us know the exact numbers of chariots and horsemen and foot soldiers. This is not the kind of truth which Scripture was given to us to convey.

Ok so when these verses are put into Hebrew they should have the same words? Wouldn’t it have the same words in Latin/English? Or is it because there were different people translating it to help create the first English bible?

I just wanted to know why these verses sound alike just with different words. Not trying to challenge Catholicism 😦

MarkA16, I would expect you to be challenging a non-catholic over these more than a catholic, lol. Anyway, to use my own words, I have been taught that the bible, has no mistakes in matters pertinent to the cause of our salvation. That is the ultimate purpose of God’s word, and you won’t find any mistakes in the bible that compromises it.

These verses sound alike because they probably came from the same source. If you read the Old Testament attentively you will notice that some books who disappeared where also quoted in the Old Testament. Around thirteen books.

Examples:

Book of the war of the Lords. Numbers 21:14
The book of Jasher. Joshua. 10:13
Book of the Acts of Solomon. 1 Kings 11:41
Book of Samuel the Seer and the book of Nathan the prophet and the Book of
Gad the Seer. 1 Chronicles 29:29 2 Chronicles 9:29
Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia Esther 10: 1-2
Chronicles of King David 1 Chronicles 27:24
The Manner of the Kingdom / Book of Statutes 1 Samual 10:25
Book of Shemaiah the Prophet 2 Chronicles 12:15
Prophecy of Abijah 2 Chronicles 9:29
Story of Prophet Iddo 2 Chronicles 13:22
Iddo Genealogies 2 Chroniques 12:15
Book of Jehu 2 Chroniques 20 :34

Pretty cool :). May I ask what happened to those books? They were just lost? Or had no importance?

I also noticed that the difference between the DRV and KJV is that the names are spelled differently. Semeias instead of Shemaiah, Addo instead of Iddo. Is this the same reason for verses?

My name in French is Michel, and in English it’s Michael , but in Hebrew it’s mîykâ’êl (me-kaw-ale’). Some English Bible versions are keeping the Hebrew phonetic for proper names.

Mark:

I almost turned agnostic when I found out for the first time there were errors in the Bible I owned. How could I discern doctrine if the very book that I needed to analyze contained error? How could God let this happen? What if my doctrine is based on an error in the Bible? (Note: I was a Protestant at the time)

First, although this website is anti-Catholic unfortunately, you will note it has a section called “Bible Difficulties” on the left. It goes through each of these contradictions. I say take a gander at them. They have very good explanations of these supposed contradictions.

Now, while people here are quoting the Catechism (CCC 107) saying the Bible is inerrant only in things necessary for our salvation is simply false. The Catechism is not aligning with the infallible claims of the Church throughout the centuries. The Church has stated time and time again the Scriptures are inerrant on everything it asserts to be true, regardless if it’s for our salvation or not.

One thing to note is that God did not promise every scribe and copyist to be infallible or inerrant when copying the Bible down through the centuries. Thus, only the original manuscripts are without error.

They are all lost.

For archeologists, historians and anthropologists they have a great importance.

Concerning **the revelation **of God we can trust the Bible at 100%. Scholars did a very great job and they corrected 96% of the mistakes. Only less than a dozen of passages were really difficult for them.
