Convalidation Ceremony Dress Color

I need some advice. My DH and I are having our convalidation ceremony next Friday and I cannot find a dress! I was trying to go for a soft white, ivory color, but this time of year is really hard to find those things.

What I need to know is, do you think there are any rules as to the color I wear? I mean I don’t want to wear black (even though I found a TON of great black dresses!), but I don’t want to feel like I need to wear white or ivory or even a light pink either.

Any help would be very much appreciated!!

Congratulations! You can wear any color you like – just as you can for any wedding. The white dress does not have religious significance; it’s simply a common choice among brides. Many blessings on your marriage.
 
I definitely don’t want anything long, knee length is fine. It’s going to be a very small ceremony. My DH and I, my sister and BIL and 1 or 2 friends. It won’t be during or after mass, it’s being done on a Friday night around 5:00 p.m.

I’m just having such a hard time trying to find the “appropriate” color and it just dawned on me that does it have to be a certain color. I mean I won’t do black or even red for that matter, but navy, can I do that?

Congratulations! As AnnArbor wrote, you don’t need to wear any particular color. If it’s going to be a small ceremony–just you, your husband and a couple of witnesses, you can wear any nice dress or suit that you like. I’m assuming it’s not a walk-down-the-aisle with a hundred guests kind of ceremony. But, even if it were, you can wear whatever you want. The dress and the color mean nothing–they’re just cultural things.

I know what you mean about black being all there is in nicer dresses, as if all other colors are anathema. 😛 I ended up buying a jacket with a white and black pattern and a white blouse and wore a pair of black slacks I already owned for a formal dinner dance because I simply couldn’t find any dresses that fit or that I liked. I should have done what I’m suggerting now–ask a store assistant to help you find what you’re looking for. They know the inventory and the store, which will save you some time searching on your own. That’s what they get paid for, so use them. 🙂

I think you can choose whichever color you would like. 🙂 Though I can definitely see why you might want to avoid something like black.

The reason I asked is because I recently ordered a dress from a small CA based company via etsy and am very happy with them and they have some lighter colored dresses that are knee-length, so maybe it would be worth looking into. I mean, I have no idea what style dress you’re looking for so it may or may not be helpful, but I figured I’d post this anyway 🙂

Thank you for the examples! They’re all very cute! You all have made me feel a little better about not having to look for something light. I’m headed to the mall in about an hour and I will not leave without something!

  1. Aww that’s so sweet of you, unfortunately there’s no time!! I’m determined between tonight and tomorrow to find one. I think now that I’ve got that white/ivory out of my head, I’ll be ok!

Keep in mind that since most young women getting married are having their attendant wear short dresses rather than long, you might find something cute on the sample rack at the Bridal shop.

Dillards and Macy’s both have plenty of great dresses. And a nice golden one would serve well.

Look in the bridesmaid dept of most bridal shops. There you can pick from a variety of colors after you pick a style.
 
I was just re-thinking the color of my dress. We are keeping it low key. It was just going to be my witnesses and my mom. My daughter’s work schedule was weekends, but now she has weekends off for month of March. So, she will be there. And, one by one, my sister’s kids are coming. Her and my BIL are witnesses. I feel bad that my own son will not make it, as his schedule will not permit it. He does not live locally, and he has a new job that he can not jeopardize.

Anyways, back to the dress color. Since we are basically keeping it simple, I wanted a a dress that I would wear to church. Not a special occasion dress that I will wear once. I was looking for a deep purple, jade, or neutral color. Most of the dresses were black. Anyways, I bought a coral dress. My husband is color blind, and told me that he liked my red dress. I said it is not red!! But, it is a very bright coral, so leaning towards red. I am thinking that the color would not be appropriate for lent. My husband says I am stressing way too much over all of this. Yes, I am, but, I want it to be appropriate. It was hard to even find a modest dress. I am thinking that perhaps, I should go back and look for another color, again?

I will be relieved once this is all over with. It has been a lot of stress. Worth it, of course! I can not wait to be able to receive communion again!

Red is the color of the Feast of the Passion and Palm Sunday , so yes, a reddish hue is ok for Lent. Best wishes!
