My wife and I married outside the church. After almost 20 years we will have the marriage convalidated. We are all set with meeting the requirements. I cannot find a link to a sample convalidation ceremony anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction?

thanks

That is because there is no convalidation ceremony.

The Rite of Marriage is used.

As I understand it is a simple ceremony. We are getting our marriage convalidated on Saturday so I’ll let you know…

A convalidation is a wedding ceremony, plain and simple. It can be within a Mass or within a celebration of the word. Like a regular wedding, it can be very simple or very elaborate. It can be just the husband and wife with 2 witnesses or it can be in front of a church full of people. It all depends on what the couple wants.

We just got the ball rolling last Thursday (5/27) when we met with our priest. He said it only takes about 10-15 minutes and we’d do it in his office. He also mentioned it’s primarily exchanging of vows in the priest’s presence.

It’s exactly the same wedding ceremony as if you were getting married for the first time. I suppose it can take as long as you want.

I don’t know if this is a requirement everywhere or not, but when my marriage was convalidated (about 30 seconds before I was confirmed), our priest had to submit the same paperwork to the diocese as he would if we were kids getting married the first time. It might take a couple of days for it to be approved by the diocese, just so you’ll know.

Yes, the priest has to do the same pre-nuptial interview as he would if you weren’t already legally married and do the same paperwork for the diocese. The only difference is that he doesn’t have to do the government paperwork that accompanies a regular wedding.

Yep, with the same questions! 😃

Which had their own charm after 20+ years of marriage . . . (yes, my husband and I can and do, etc.)

One of my adult Confirmation candidates, who was quite active in our parish, opted for a full up mass one evening to convalidate their marriage, which a couple dozen of their parish friends and family attended. Some of the ladies put on a small reception for them in the hall afterward.

For the marriage ceremony they had their children, four or five, up in the sanctuary with them. Father said, “I know this is silly but I have to ask - Do you promise to be open to children?” At that point an 8 or 9 year old niece piped up, " Does that mean that aunt — is going to have another baby? I wish she’d get a puppy instead." 😃

While on this topic, I was wondering this morning, what should I wear? Ours will be at 9 am on a Saturday and will be in the priest’s office. Initially I thought a nice knit cotton button up shirt and a nice pair of shorts (like something you’d wear to a luau; yes, we’re in Kansas, not Hawaii) because it’s so brief. We probably won’t even be in the church for more than 20 minutes. But should I wear pants a polo instead?
