My Convalidation is hours away and no one has told me how much $ I am supposed to give my Deacon for performing the ceremony.

Can anyone give me advice on how much you gave your church for your wedding or convalidation. Is $100 enough??? No one gave me a price for using the church either.

I just want to do the right thing 🙂 Thank you!!

I’m sorry…I didn’t think there was any obligation to pay for a convalidation. It’s like paying for a blessing. 🤷

No, there’s no obligation. It’s not like the deacon will refuse to convalidate unless he gets a payment or anything.

However, it is entirely appropriate, as a thankyou for the service the deacon is doing for you (which usually involves meetings with the couple, and preparation and rehearsal, as well as the ceremony itself) to give him a gift of some kind, which may or may not be a monetary gift.

As St Paul says, the labourer is worthy of his hire. THAT is what the gift is about, recognising the labour. It’s no more like paying for a blessing than the bonus payment is that any worker might get if they do a good job or a particularly important one.

Personally, I think $100 would be fine. If you’re really unsure, possibly call the parish office and ask the secretary if they know what the usual payment is.

I recommend a quick call to the parish secretary. He/she will probably give you an idea of a typical stipend for a convalidation.

It is whatever you wish to give. There is no charge for the Rite. Usually people give $25 to$100.

one guideline that might help is what you would pay a professional for an hour

bear in mind many deacons are not on a salary, esp. if they are retired, and these stipends and donations are a major source of their income.

I don’t know about for a convalidation but my parish recomends a stipend of $125 for a wedding outside of a mass and $200 for a full mass, they do not charge registered contributing parishoners for use of the chruch or chapel.

We had our marriage convalidated last Saturday, and we gave our priest a card with $100. We weren’t sure if he generally keeps the money for his own use or it he gives it to the church, so we put in cash to avoid any confusion with who the check was made out to.

When we had ours done, I asked. The deacon refused to take any $$ for the service.

One of our former parish priests performed our convalidation, and we gave him $100 in a card thanking him for all of his help.
