First post, good to be here!

Apologies if this question has already been asked and answered; I searched, but didn’t see anything on this specific issue.

My husband and I are baptized Catholics, unconfirmed, married 28 years ago in a civil ceremony while both serving in the military.

We have been non-practicing for many years, but I’ve recently made the decision to return to the Church. I would very much like to be confirmed and have a marriage convalidation so I can participate in the sacraments and start living a fully committed Catholic life.

My husband, however, does not join me in this desire. He does not want to go through RCIA for confirmation and is not interested in or willing to go through with a convalidation.

I pray he changes his mind but as of now, it seems unlikely and he is very firm in his decision. In a case such as this, where only one spouse wishes to return to the church, is there any recourse that would allow me to remain married and receive the sacraments?

Thank you!

Talk to your pastor, there are other issues (such as, were either of you married previously?) that need to be explored. If the criteria are met, a Radical Sanation may be an option. Your pastor is your starting point. Welcome home!!

Talk to your pastor about radical sanation, which is a convalidation that makes the marriage valid from the start without new exchange of consent. And your husband need not participate.
