Thomas, I believe that Deacons can lead mass. Perhaps you can have a Deacon lead a mass in your home. Of course, you may want to check it out with your local priest.

Still praying for Thomas and his family.

No, deacons cannot ‘lead Mass’. Mass is the celebration of the Eucharist and only a priest can do that.

OTOH, there is always the possibility of having a “Sunday Celebration in the Absence of a Priest”, that’s a Liturgy of the Word, sometimes with Communion, and it doesn’t require a Deacon, although he would be the first choice as Leader if there is one in the parish.

The diocesan website shows 43 parishes, 162 priests and 20 permanent Deacons – if I’ve translated correctly – and that’s only a slight change from the stats from 2004 that we find on the Catholic Hierarchy website.

They seem pretty well-off compared to my diocese which has 30 priests (including 5 retired + one ill and in his 80s who refuses to retire) & no deacons, for 26 parishes and missions in an area 3/4 the size of Sweden.

Hello Phemie. I knew that there was something that a Deacon could preside over with Communion…thought it could also be called a Mass…Thank you for the clarification.
