I did a civil marriage with my spouse outside United States. We wedded in a civil court after getting an annulment from my previous marriage. We are trying to have our marriage convalidated by a catholic priest since both of us are catholic. Please I was just wondering if anyone can advise me on the steps to follow. Lest I forget, we are living in Los Angeles. Thanks.

The preparation for a convalidation is the same as that for marriage. The only real difference is that since you were married before, you will need to show proof that you are free to marry (Tribunal decision and possibly final divorce papers). You’re priest will guide you through the details.

Yes, the steps are:
  1. Go see your priest and bring ALL of your paperwork along with you. Divorce decree, annulment, current civil marriage certificate, and baptismal certificates if possible. If your wife was born outside the US you may need her birth certificate, baptismal certificate and possibly her passport. Bring all of your documents just in case.
  2. He will likely require you to go to pre-Cana classes, at least some of them, and take a compatibility test. Or he may require you to meet with him in person.
  3. You’ll need to schedule a date and time for your ceremony. This does not need to be a Big Deal, you can have the ceremony in the chapel, all you need are 2 witnesses and the priest.
But go see your priest as the first step.

God’s Spirit is in my heart,
He has called me and set me apart.
This is what I have to do,
what I have to do.

He sent me to give the Good News to the poor,
Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
Tell blind people that they can see,
And set the downtrodden free
And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come,
And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come.

Just as the Father sent me,
So I’m sending you out to be
My witnesses throughout the world,
The whole of the world.

Don’t worry what you have to say,
Don’t worry because on that day
God’s Spirit will speak in your heart,
Will speak in your heart.
