Conversion is HARD for me

You sound exactly like an atheist who says it is “hard”, “heavy and grievous” to be a Christian in general, because being a Christian means having to “follow rules”, which an atheist is not really fond of “following”.

Anyway,

Many blessings,

E.C.

P.S. the quotation marks for the word “following” is because, once you truly believe, realize and accept that you are in the truth, you really don’t follow “rules” out your own effort or strength (whether it be a Christian in general or a Catholic Christian specifically), but you feel a hunger, a yearning for those “rules” because it is the Holy Spirit who inspires you to follow them.
Jesus said His yoke is easy. The Catholic church has instituted many religious rules which are unnecessary.

Do you mind elaborating?
Carol Marie is just wondering, if you can do your Confession all by yourself, then what about the other Sacraments?

Did you baptize yourself? Do you give Holy Communion to yourself? Did you get married by yourself? Do you do your own sermons and service of praise and worship at home by yourself?

And, if it’s all just you and Jesus, who are these “one another” that He commands us to love?

Not the first time I went to Confession, but very early on - probably my third or fourth Confession, I was waiting in line, and while I was waiting in line, I was talking to Jesus, and He was making known some things to me - I was also rehearsing my Confession - what I wanted to say to the priest, and Jesus was listening to all of this, and He was helping me get prepared, and reminding me of my sins in the most gentle way that He does, as you know, of course, if you are a person of prayer.

So, while I was doing that, I said to Him, “Hey, wait a minute. I can talk to You directly, and I can understand what You are saying back to me - so why must I wait here in line to go to Confession with a priest, when You already know my Confession, anyway?”

He said the most amazing thing to me; He said, “So that the priest can learn how to love you - and so that you can learn how to love him, and so that you can learn how to be obedient to Me in all things.”

Jesus said His yoke is easy. The Catholic church has instituted many religious rules which are unnecessary.
I am a recent convert to Catholicism and I haven’t been handed a massive book of rules which weigh me down everytime I attend Mass.

Matters of faith are not always easy, but I have yet to see these “unnecessary religious rules” of which you speak.

Do you confess your sins to God?
Yup! And in the way Jesus wanted us to!

:bible1: John 20:21-23
21 (Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit.
23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

From the Catechism of the Catholic church

Only God forgives sin

1441
Only God forgives sins.39 Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself, “The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” and exercises this divine power: "Your sins are forgiven."40 Further, by virtue of his divine authority he gives this power to men to exercise in his name.41

39 Cf. Mk 2:7.
40 Mk 2:5,10; Lk 7:48.
41 Cf. Jn 20:21-23.

AMEN! his yoke is easy and his burden is LIGHT. However an atheist, who just doesn’t get it, and who tends to RESIST the spirit, thinks that being a Christian in general (whether it be Catholic or protestant) is a HARD yoke and a HEAVY burden. This is exactly like you are sounding, although you are closer to the truth than an atheist because you are a Christian, but still you just don’t get it. You emphatically deny this truth, and obviously, just like an atheist finds Hard Yokes and Heavy burdens where there aren’t any.

believers:
The Catholic church has instituted many religious rules which are unnecessary.
And you based this affirmation on what? your private interpretations of Scriptures? Well, both scripture and historical Christianity are against you.

Christ instituted all the sacraments and all that you call “rules”, which the Spirit inspires us to hunger and yearn for. You protestants got rid or belittled many of them when you came along in the 16th century, and that is a true historical fact.

Let me ask you as question:

**What would you answer to an atheist or to a laid-back “Christian” that tells you that many of the “rules” that you do follow, such as not lying, not stealing, not fornicating, not aborpting babies, not getting drunk, going to Church every sunday, etc. are hard yokes and heavy burdens?? **

Many blessings,

Thank you for saying that…! 🙂

It absolutely boggles me everytime someone says they are “overwhelmed” by “legions of oppressive rules”, when every person in Church gives me no-end of slack when there is something to “do” which I haven’t fully absorbed yet.

“Don’t worry about it!”, with a big smile, is the usual expression when I get concerned about something I SHOULD know which I don’t yet.

“It’ll come…”, is what they tell me. The only requirements are the ones we place on ourselves.

…and I’m one who actually LIKES to read the Catechism…!

Carol Marie is just wondering, if you can do your Confession all by yourself, then what about the other Sacraments?
Psa 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
Did you baptize yourself?
I was baptized in the Holy Spirit when I believed on Jesus and repented from sin.
Do you give Holy Communion to yourself?
No, I participate in this ritual in REMEMBRANCE of Him with other church members.
Did you get married by yourself?
No, I married my wife.
Do you do your own sermons and service of praise and worship at home by yourself?
No, I read the Bible and go to church to worship and praise Jesus. I get fed more Word too.
And, if it’s all just you and Jesus, who are these “one another” that He commands us to love?
We are to love everybody and that includes our enemies.

Your sins of unrighteousness is none of the priest’s business unless you’ve trespassed against him personally.

Psa 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

I noticed you don’t put prayers. You just said, read the Bible and praise.

How about private prayer? I think Prayer is more powerful than mere reading the Bible.

…{snip}…

Your sins of unrighteousness is none of the priest’s business unless you’ve trespassed against him personally.

Psa 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
And if there’s no interest (for obvious reasons) in understanding the priciple of In Persona Christi, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one, won’t we? 🙂

Best to you…!

Keep in mind that this is David, speaking of the sin that he had confessed in the presence of Nathan the prophet, who was the one through whom God gave David the assurance of the forgiveness of his sins.

David did not confess his sin “directly to God” in the sense that Protestants understand that idea. He confessed to God in the presence of God’s prophet, Nathan, in very much the same way that we Catholics confess our sins to God in the presence of God’s man, the priest, and we hear the words of forgiveness that come from God, spoken by the priest.

Now, I read all the rules of the Church, and I feel this heavy burden to follow them to a “T” or my soul is in grave danger…
Understand that God is gracious. A heart after his own heart is in a good place, friend. Do not fear rejection from the God you seek wholeheartedly! (Jer. 29:13)
I know that the sacraments, praying the Rosary, etc are supposed to bring me closer to God, but, it feels like He is more distant than ever.
Ritualism can be incredibly harmful, but only when one partakes in it without sincerity, or without comprehending its meaning. I would advise this: Talk to Yeshua. Just sit down and tell him about these things, and ask him to help. Until your head and heart are cleared, drop the ritualism in favor of pure communication, and resume only when you feel ready or led to …
