I am beginning to think disturbing dreams that I have are indicative of the true state of my heart.

Often times in these dreams I do not react or do as my conscious mind knows is correct.

I realize dreams aren’t an act of will or am I culpable for having them. I am trying to discern if they are a result of fallen nature- the war of the flesh or are in fact pointing to a hardness of heart.

Any opinions on the subconscious revealing the true state of ones heart and practical helps to conversion of heart would be welcomed.

I think I desire true conversion of heart yet disturbing dreams leave me feeling white-washed instead.

Am I somehow being dishonest with myself about desiring true conversion of heart and this is being shown to me by my disturbing dreams?

Peace.

I have read over the past few months, a lot about the lives of different saints. And it seems that quite a few of them (male and female) were troubled by disturbing dreams. I’ve also heard it said… that the devil will often use our sleep… when we’re vulnerable… to plant ideas or images in our brains… and minds… that are anything but “holy”.

I’ve been troubled by these types of dreams too. I purchased a small crucifix… which I now keep under my pillow. When I awaken from a bad dream… I put my hand on it… and say a “Glory Be” or a “Hail Mary” (when I particularly want my Mother 😉 ). It helps, a lot. Perhaps this would help you, too. Hang in there. God loves you very much.

We really aren’t responsible for what goes on in our dreams, but I used to have a certain recurrent dream that I believe was a message to me, but whether it came from my subconscious or God, I don’t know. I rarely have it anymore.

It was always about a house, sometimes the details differed, but the house was always so charming and sweet, and well kept, with flowers and grass, and everything, just the type I’d like to own. I would go through the front door and noticed that things looked a little unkempt, and the further I got into the house, the worse it got. I just coudn’t believe how bad it looked–and then before I would proceed past a certain point I would wake up. I was always very sad about how bad my house looked on the inside.

One day it occurred to me that that house might just be ME!
All clean and good on the outside, going to church, Bible study, doing good things, etc., but really needing a good cleaning on the inside. A thorough scrubbing and tidying up. And another thing–my house was always so very dim and dark inside–it needed sunlight very badly, and I would choke on the dust and run into cobwebs. Anyway, I realized the need for a change–I needed to clean up my act on the inside, and get rid of certain things, attitudes, habits, behaviors etc. I needed to expose myself to the Sonlight. I had had a conversion experience, but I wasn’t really continuing in that conversion.

I rarely have that dream anymore, but sometimes I still do, so I know my “house” still needs cleaning. Yes, I think that sometimes our dreams are trying to tell us something. But most of the time I think they are just dreams. I don’t spend too much time thinking about them.

…hello-wonderful instincts on your dream-the house indeed was you-…I do intuitive dream interpretation-and have found that most dreams are messages-or even visits-… negative emotions such as fear, depression, grief, anger often distort or block the intent of the message…but our angels are persistent and will keep trying until we get the message right which is why we have repeating dreams or dreams with seemingly similar themes…God’s love even allows connections in dreams with family and friends who have passed-nothing to fear -ask God to surround you with love before you go to sleep and expect miracles and messages…God Bless

…blessed are those who mourn-for they shall be comforted

…one more thing-…if you are troubled by disturbing dreams- it more than likely is because of your own emotions and has nothing to do with the message- many times if we haven’t been “listening”-our angels will do what I call “impact” dreams to get our attention-…if you would like to detail your dream- I would be more than happy to try to give you some insight- …hope this helps…God Bless

…also I want to caution to only look to God and His Love for answers-do not give any power to His adversary (I don’t even like to mention his name) by letting such things cross your mind-

May God comfort you with His Love and bring peace to your heart…amen

Thanks for the advice. The dreams have subsided since I posted this. I have been praying a healing prayer before sleep, doing a bit of fasting and asking for intercessions in different ways and its working. They first began after renewal of the Montfort conceration on the last Marian feast day (Candle-Mass-Presentation/Purification of the Lord). The dreams are vague to me now since posting but were consistently about various fights and temptations of the flesh (in the nautre of hardness of heart toward others and lust) and instead of doing the virtuous thing in the dream I was sinning. Though I know in my conscious mind the difference and reason to make the right choice, in my dreams I seemed unaware that what I was doing was sinful or just didn’t care and was overtaken with the emotions which left me feeling disturbed when I awoke afeared its an omen that perhaps I am drifting from my walk toward better obeying Gods will. A slight increase in my prayer life and abandonment to heaven seems to be helping allot though. I want to walk with Jesus even in my subconscious and felt as if I was being insincere in my conversion as a result of the dreams or that they were an indicator of this state.

Peace.

In general if a dream is disturbing in a spiritual sense, enough to cause concern and problems in your waking life, take it to a priest. If a dream is troubling in a psychological sense, enough to cause problems in your waking life, take it to a psychologist.

If the actions and symbols in the dream become obvious upon careful reflection after waking, and seem to make sense to you and to be a way in which your unconscious is telling you something important and correct, you may act upon it. Such as a dream that seems to indicate you are neglecting spiritual or family duties, a dream that seems to spur you to practice the virtues, should be acted upon. If the dream seems to spur you to do something outside traditional CAtholic devotion and practice, take it to a priest.

(((((JoabArias))))…repeating dreams and repeating dream themes are messages that are trying to be delivered- and our Angels(his messengers) will be very persistent until we “get it”…then the dreams will change or subside…sounds like you finally did that soul search they knew would be productive if you listened…(((hugs))) …the main thing to remember is that God loves you very much-and has much faith in you to make the right choices when prompted to do so…:angel1: :angel1: 🙂 God Bless

Interesting reply. I’d just posted in another thread that, as I recall, we were taught not to believe in dreams, which makes it hard when we dream of the deceased, thinking they’re telling us something, etc. So, perhaps sometimes it’s evil planting things there, especially to confuses us or distract us from truth - who knows?

I think thats good advice.

(((((Conservative)))))…I don’t know who taught you not to believe in dreams or who taught you to fear such messages-dream interpretation is very Biblical and accepted…God spoke to many of His prophets through dreams…remember it is the fruits of the spirit that tells you what you are dealing with and messages of love and happiness from those who have crossed are only possible through God’s love- love is the connection and Jesus made it all possible with his promises to us in the Beatitudes… and on the cross.

Blessed are those who mourn-for they shall be comforted…

“I am the resurrection and the life;he who believes in me,even if he die, shall live-and whoever lives and believes in me, shall never die”

on a personal observation-(((Conservative))) you will find what you seek-if you seek evil in everything and satan around every corner you will find him-because everytime you speak of such things you give them power and draw their attention…if you seek God and His Love in all things- that is what you will find…perfect love drives out fear-those who fear cannot be made perfect in God’s Love…

Look to the Lord and His strength;seek His face always

Very comforting reply. Thanks. I believe he can’t read our thoughts. It’s scary to think he can “plant” thoughts. I realize he tries to influence them though with all manner of deceptions and accusations. Do you have any resources to how/where you heard he can do this in our sleep? I think these particular recurrent dreams I had were to do with falls from my past that I never want to repeat so figure that anxiety may have been resurfacing.

Peace.

Good point. I find it significant that since I have expressed to the Lord that I wish not to sin, even in my dreams, that they have ceased.

In my experience I find that when I have confessed and later in the night I go to sleep like clockwork I will have dreams that are sinful and I wake up very angry because I know it is the evil one behind the dreams. There have been times that when I wake up the dreams were so vivid that I think I have actually committed the sins in the dream.

One has to be ever vigilant when it comes to ones own actions and the evil one. It may seem to some that dreams are all innocent but I have found that I have had to fight off flashbacks of these dreams.

The more pure that the intentions are in deciding not to sin, even in ones mind, the more the evil looks for other avenues to attack.

Peace

…if I may make a suggestion-…since you are developing a pattern here that clearly opens you up to such things with your anger-Before you go to bed ask God and His Angels to surround you with love and not let anything evil near you…affirm out loud that you do not accept what doesn’t come through God’s Love- be at peace knowing you are in good hands…then let it go to God…hope this helps…God Bless
