Conversion thoughts?

Hey guys,

Although I’m a member of a different church just now, I’ve often felt drawn to Catholicism from a young age, and I’m now seriously considering conversion. However, while researching about the Church I’ve read a lot about the negative effects of Vatican II and, as there is an SSPX chapel nearby to where I live, I’m not sure whether to move towards that or move more towards the more liberal Church.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, hopefully with your support I’ll be able to complete my journey!

Dear Robert,

First of all,welcome!

Secondly, if you feel that way, you should look for a chapel that celebrates the Tridentine Mass but still does not struggle in its relationship with Rome. I am sure someone here can help you find one! It should offer you beauty, the treasure of Tradition and healthy, solid teaching…

Also a small warning: Do not get your self pulled in to groups that focuses all of their energy on complaining about Vatican II. It happened, for good and for bad! There is a lot of abuse in some areas, but the main solution should be to offer an alternative.

Welcome to CAF!

First, I would recommend spending the most amount of time actually reading what the Church teaches. Read the Catechism. Read the Documents of Vatican II. The internet talking heads are legion. It can be difficult to sort the good from the bad if you don’t already have some understanding of what the Catholic Church actually teaches.

Second, we don’t want to create a false dichotomy. SSPX and liberal Catholicism are not your only two options. You want to find a Catholic community that is in good standing and takes Catholic teaching seriously.

As for you conversion question. I don’t think that you should be looking at it in terms of “liberal” or “conservative”. If you are drawn to the Catholic Church, then it is to the Church in communion with the Holy Father in Rome and is governed by the teachings summarized in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Build your conversion on this and you can’t go wrong whether you’re individual spirituality draws you toward the more contemplative or the more charismatic…

As previously said, when first coming into the Church it may be best to avoid any groups that have an agenda or any kind of chip on their shoulder.

I always advise people contemplating Catholicism to try going on retreat to a monastery.

It’s not that bad and Latin mass could be hard to come by , I think if you go to mass and read some positive things about vll it will make you feel better and after all its christa church

If you’re going to be Catholic, be fully Catholic. If you were my friend, I would say stay away from SSPX until they come home.

I would suggest that if you are really reliant on a post on this forum to be the reason for you to swim the tiber, then you are not yet ready! If a few scandels of the recent past are to put you off, then you are not ready to join us.

However, if the 2 thousand year history of fidelity to defending the truths of the Incarnation, the Resurrection, the Trinity, the Community of Saints, the Mass, and so on and so on, for episode after episode, calls to your heart and your mind, then maybe - just maybe - you are ready to undergo serious inquiry, leading to committment.

There are also places that celebrate the Tridentine Mass and do not have problems with the pope. There is the FSSP, for example.
