Take the time to find a Catholic Radio Station and find EWTN on cable or satelite. Marcos Grodi “The Journey Home” comes on at 7:00 P.M. Central Time. Go to the www.ewtn.org and look up the coming home network. There you will find at least 2 or 3 archived programs with former Church of Christ members. I’ve spoken personally with 2, Bruce Sullivan and the other is Fr. Ben. They are both really good men from what I know. …emergency got to go…kids.
Hope your kids are ok!

Thanks for the info. I love EWTN, I can usually catch a mass if I’m working (RN’s work odd hours, lol) so I don’t feel quite so bad about not attending locally if I have to work. I can’t receive the Eucharist at this point as a catechumen at any rate but still feel closer after attending mass.

Certainly he realizes that in the CoC you can’t divorce “except for adultery”? That’s not very CoC of him.

And I’m really sorry you’re having to deal with this…it is so hard for CoC family to understand. I was nearly disowned by my own CoC parents for becoming Catholic.

I’ll certainly keep you in my prayers! :hug3:
Stephanie,
You have a good point to make here. Church of Christ Christians would never accept a divorce for other than death or infedelity. But admittedly, I was nervous when I approached my DW. Fortunately, we were reading Catholic documents simultaniously and she was bouncing things off you at the time during her day. I was busy reading about Orthodox and Catholic teachings and realized that I had to at least confess my sins after leaving for 17 years. So like you nearly being disowned, that is why we have not told our family. Fear factor is high. But I’m ready to take the plunge, but since it’s my DW’s family she needs to be the one to do this. I’m not sure how DW will handle this.

Kids are okay…but we had a chaotic moment getting ready for a youth group to meet in our home tonight. All went well. Some really cute girls and boys in the group. I drug DW off to the side and told her that if my boys don’t go to the priesthood these are the type of girls I want them to marry…sweet. But you never really know. The world’s working against them. That’s why we need to catechize them early.

He has already been married once & divorced (she left him after he committed adultery but I never knew about it until after we were married as she had left the area and I had just heard his side of things). I also didn’t know until after we were married that he didn’t consider it valid (so I’m like, then why marry me?) so I’m sure that’s why it’s no big deal to him to threaten to divorce me if I go to RCIA class (which I’m going to do - I am scheduled to go in early to talk to Father H---- about the first marriage although now I’m sure he won’t seek an annullment). I guess it will make it easier for me to have the possibility for an annullment on my part if he does divorce me as he is still considered married to his first wife. I just wish I’d have known then what I know now, both scripturally & personally so I wouldn’t be in this mess. Lol, I’m sure my post is about as clear as mud.

Wow, what a mess! I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that. It always upsets me how some people can be so self-righteous when it comes to Catholic-bashing and refusing to examine Catholic beliefs, and yet they don’t seem to care enough about their own faith to even be remorseful about going against it. To me, that shows that one’s faith is not based on love but on hate. It smacks of the Pharisee’s prayer, “I may not exactly be doing the right things according to my faith, but the most important thing is THANK GOD I’m not like those Catholics!!” 😦

Fellow ex-CoCer here :console:

Is your hubby active in his congregation? If he is I’m certainly surprised. I grew up in the anti-version of the CoC and if I remember correctly the “guilty” party in a “scriptural” divorce wasn’t allowed to remarry even though the innocent party was.

Were you CoC before you married him?

He is not active in the COC after his divorce (hence why he feels our marriage is not valid per my post & I had no idea it wasn’t until I started studying Catholicism). I have never been to a COC. I was predominantly Methodist in the past.

My wife is Methodist and will not even consider looking into the Catholic faith. She will not read anything I suggest to her why I am a
Catholic. So, how does one get their wives to understand Catholic beliefs? She wants me to go back to the way we were. In the Methodist church and I can’t. I am a returning Catholic and will remain one until my death. Every time I go to Mass she gets quite upset. How do I handle the situation? How do I get her to even consider going to Mass with me?

I have to put in a plug for a friend of mine, Bruce Sullivan. He also converted before his wife. His most recent book is “Christ In His Fullness”. Many people that I know are converts. My wife is a convert and I am a “revert” after spending 17 years in a fundamental evangelical church. You wife’s pain is caused from feeling betrayed by your chose. She probably feels separated from you because of your conversion. I’d suggest to pull up the “didache” and read it together. Then read Ignatius of Antioch’s writings, particularly to the Smyrnaeans. On his way to be martyred he used the Greek word καθολικός from which we get the Latinized Catholicum or Catholic.

Our former preacher even stood before an anti-creed congregation and gave a historical spill on the Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed. That was okay until he directed us to stand and recite it together. I asked him just a couple of weeks ago, about why he covered this and had us recite it 3 1/2 years ago. His response is that most church of Christ do not really know history and the he beleives that the Nicene Creed not only showed the historical church and what they believed but that it was also more profound that even Acts 2:eek: . That’s coming from a solo scriptura preacher where most of us * would rather die than admit it.

Believe me when I say this. I would not be back to the Catholic Church if I had not discovered the truth in the ancient documents we refer to as the ancient church fathers. As difficult as it is to swallow I was running to the Orthodox Church after my first experience with knuckleheaded Catholics years ago. The problem is that after discovering the truth and hearing Jimmy Akin say to another non-practicing Catholic “would you leave Peter because of Judas”. I turned white and even more white as I dug up the truth about the early church. Even the scripture supports it and all the other non-Catholic or anti-teachings I learned were easlity thrown out the window leaving me with no choice but to convert. Now instead of running from knuckleheaded Catholics, I pray for them and do my best to teach them what I have learned from my Protestant days that points directly to the one holy catholic and apostolic church. It was discovering and learning about the Eastern Orthodox Church that brought me to realize I needed to go home and accept where I was supposed to be all those years.

You might want to note that my father-in-law was a bishop in a Protestant faith and 2 of my brother-in-laws are preachers, not to mention some of their sons and son-in-laws. Another brother-in-law went to preacher school but decided to blow off his last 2 classes because he finally realized that they were blowing smoke. I wanted to become a preacher and my wife kept me from it all these years. Thank God she did, because could you imagine my life if I had been educated only in Bible College. Not much you can do with that. However, I cherish the strong scriptural background that I obtained from that faith, but finally realized that it is limited outside the authority and teaching of the Church that everyone seems to hate and run from. Ironically, there are about 1.2 billion Catholics and 240 million Orthodox that make up the one holy catholic and apostolic church *.

The main thing is to be patient and kind. Bring her to an orthodox RCIA program. Read about liturgy and how it was used in the early church. Read about the history of the canon of scripture and how /why Catholic/Orhtodox bibles are bigger. The key is grace, but learning about history will give you something tangible in the mean time. Pray and fast for you wife. Look at www.e5men.org and follow their guidelines to sacrifice for your wife. Men are to love their wives as Christ loves the Church.

I always pray for converts because I’ve been in your shoes hoping my wife would let go of our former faith that became obvious to me was not the true church as they claim. I thought it might be the Orthodox Church, but discovered how similar they are to te Catholic Church. I think the dual Tradition passed down throughout the ages is what pointed to the ancient Church. But God showed me mercy and brought conversion to my wife and oldest son and in the mean time he softened my heart to love the Church.*
