Conversion to Catholicism

Over the past few months, I have been looking at how the lord has blessed me. I have recently been accepted into the university of my choice and have to therefore move. I have been thinking about seeking out a catholic church there and the spirit has seemed to move me. I was wondering if anyone could tell me (I’m currently in a methodist church, but was baptised in the united church), what makes catholicism distinctive in christianity.
 
The Catholic Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.
One: We are one in beliefs (You can pick up the Catechism of the Catholic Church to
learn what we believe)
Holy: The Catholic Church was established by Jesus Our Lord.
Catholic: It is universal. We can go to Mass anywhere in the world and while we may not
understand the language, we are all celebrating the same Mass.
Apostolic: Our Lord chose his apostles to go and preach throughout the world, He chose
Peter to be the first Pope. Our Popes, bishops, all come from that apostolic line.
This, of course, is very elemental, but researching each can take a very long time.
One thing is no matter where you move next, you won’t have to look for a new Church,
just a Catholic Church near you! If you become Catholic, that is, and that, my friend
is what I will be praying for you.

The Catholic Church started 2000 years ago.

The hundreds of Protestant denominations didn’t show up until 1500 years later.

They missed out on a lot of persecutions and an assortment of other geo-political disasters, not to mention the spread of Islam from AD633 onward [they missed participating in 900 years of Islamic expansion and all of the consequences].

By the time the various Protestant sects got started, Columbus had already discovered America in a formal European sense. The Church had already condemned slavery. So the Protestants arrived to issue their protests of various things. In a sense they arrived in time to join the bandwagon of prosperity that was already started by the Church.

The Catholic Church wrote the Bible around AD 400 when it assembled the books of the New Testament. But you would never know it from all the biblical talk of Protestant ministers; you would think the New Testament was written in 1500; not so, not so. I did some bible study with some excellent good God fearing Christians of the non-Catholic persuasion. And you know what? They totally ignored the first 900 years from AD 400 when Saints like Jerome, Ambrose, and Augustine did the fundamental work. When I raised the issue, I was politely ignored: they had to use their study guide.

Get a copy of “The Essential Catholic Survival Guide” by the staff of Catholic Answers and also get a copy of “Catholicism and Fundamentalism” by Karl Keating, also available from Catholic Answers bookstore.

Hi, thanks for asking.

Each of the statements below are supportable by the Bible as well as historical records. That is the 2000 year Old, 265 Consecutive Popes, Catholic Church.

Christ founded Only One Church, One Faith [Mt. 16:15-19, Eph. 2: 19-21]

The Bible was completely writen by the end of the First Century

At the time the Bible was written [80/90 AD] and put into one Book [around 325 AD] there was ONLY one Christian Church; that which we know today to be the CC.

The Bible is a Catholic book. It was “birthed by the CC.” The OT was collected by Catholics, and the entire NT was written by men we know today, to be Catholic.

Thus logic concludes that the Bible not only is of Catholic Origin [a fact Luther himself admits], but it was actually written precisely for he CC.

The Term “One Church” appears over 30 times in the NT.

ONLY the Catholic Church has the Saven Sacraments, validly. All instituted by Jesus. And only the CC cn offer one, a pre-taste of heaven. A face to face meeting with the God who Created us; through His Sacrament of Catholic Holy Communion.

Only the CC can provide KNOWN forgiveness of sins. Not a guess, not simply a hope for,
but God’s own assurence that ones sins HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN. [Jn.20:20-23].

Only th CC has ben given litteraly: “The Key’s to the Kingdom of Heaven itself”, by Christ!
[Mt. 16:19]

And Only the CC has Chrsit Himself [Jn.17;14-17, and the Holy Spirit [J. 14:16]. always present in Her, to guard and INSURE Her Truth.

Only the CC has the ENTIRE Bible

Only the CC has the Entire truth on all matters of Faith and Morals and canot be in eror on these two subjects.

Jesus Himself determined the structure of the CC. Jesus Himself set up the First CC Comunity in Jerusalem. [Mt. 16:15-19, and ACTS is full of evidence of the Church in Jerusalem. **Acts: 1:8, 2:5,14, 4:16, , 5:28, 6:7, 8: 14,25, 11:22 and 12:25 for examples.

So, friend, if your looking for Christ One TRUE Church, it was, and it remains; the CC.

I like to recommend Home Sweet Rome by KImberly and Scott Hahn as a good explanation, particularly for Protestants; it is very easy to read and explains many of the most important points for them.
 
Thank you all for responding to this thread. All of you are really helping guide me in my decision. This is just the begining of my journey but I am taking all your book suggestions into consideration and I’m going to start reading up and learning about the catholic faith and I’m going to attend a catholic church as soon as possible to test it out 🙂

I was baptized a Catholic, but raised in the Methodist church. I have come to realize, however, that Catholicism has a beauty, grace, and truth that no other church possesses; I was confirmed as a Catholic last All Saints’ Day.

Perhaps the best summation of the Catholic cause I’ve ever heard is by Dr. Peter Kreeft (a former Calvinist preacher who converted to Catholicism; he’s a philosophy professor at Boston College; I’m a big fan of his).

He has a talk called “Seven Reasons Why Everyone Should be a Roman Catholic”; you can download it for $2 from Lighthouse Catholic Media. It’s a wonderful presentation, and may be the best two bucks you ever spend:
