Convert from Atheism

There are many wonderful posts on Protestants converting to the true faith,so I thought I would start my First thread on Atheists converting.

My conversion was so fast and head spinning I almost “Lost It”:eek: One day, and thank you Holy Spirit for not giving up on me, I was in an emotional dump and I looked out my window at the tree’s…YEP TREES:rolleyes: I have 4 different kinds in my back yard. Then it Hit me like a “Ton of Bricks”,If we “crawled out of the primordial oooze as a single celled organism” how do we explain the vast difference in life on our planet? Only took me 40 years to ask that question. THERE IS A GOD!!! What an awesome revelation to me.

That was the easy part,now that I knew in my brain that God existed, where in the world was I suppose to “Find” Him and learn more about Him. And that is when I went on my search.

I Googled and found a TON:eek: of Protestant faiths and read pert near every one of them. Red flag after Red flag went up. They agreed on the Trinity (still a confusing concept for me) but differed on many key points. I reasoned that if there is only ONE God (still trying to understand the Trinity:rolleyes: ) how could there be so many different beliefs in what He teaches, One God One Truth. But that is not what I found.😦

The last faith I read about, (yep you guessed it, Catholic:D ) really caught my attention. I praise God for leading me to the faithfull sites and not the hatefilled Jack Chick type sites. Long story short,the more I studied the more I realized that THIS is the True Church established by Jesus Chirst Himself.👍

That was 3 years ago. Today I am a Sacrastin and Altar Server and Youth Minister and have worked with my DRE in starting a Bible Study program at our parish.

I know I know…“You Converts”😛

I know this is the “Readers Digest” version of my conversion story but its enough to give you a very brief insight into my conversion and I am very interested in knowing if there are others like me who were once Atheists who found our Lord.

Thank you all,and Yes what a wonderful feeling of having a true and loving place to call Home.

To add a bit to my “Readers Digest” story, a few months after the death of my husband, hence the emotional dump if you will, two Southern Baptist missionaries came to my home. My then 10 year old son was interested in attending,although an Atheist, I was never Anti-Religion, so I let him attend. All was good for a few months and he was happy enough, and he WAS learning about God, and I will always thank the good people at that Southern Baptist church for introducing God to my son.

One day, my son came home saying he wanted to be baptised, not understanding anything about this, but wanting to support my son in his search, I agreed and of course I went. RED FLAGS instantly went up when I asked the preacher why my son was being baptised. His Answer?: Because he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and the baptism was JUST a public statement to that affect. I did not know why at the time, but my “gut” told me that might not be right. And that is when I started my search on the net for information.

More to the story, but my research was extensive and in the end, it lead me Home.

I myself am an atheist convert also, but I found this quote pretty funny. You really didn’t take the question very far before concluding that there must be a God to explain away the variety of life on earth.

In my humble opinion, that’s akin to wondering why planets revolve around the sun, without understanding astronomy 101, gravity, etc., and then concluding “Oh, it must be because God made it happen.” I mean, yes there is some truth in that, but science can explain at least the nature and physical origin of the phenomenon.

I don’t think there is necessarily a conflict between evolutionary science and Catholicism. I think the Church has echoed my sentiments.

Definitely the Holy Spirit was leading you to the Catholic Church! And what a great Mom you are for following the greatest journey possible for you and your son.:blessyou:
 
Welcome home!

This is an interesting thread considering I just tried to make the case for God’s existence to my Confirmation class last week using Peter Kreeft’s examples from St. Thomas’s Arguments. I had to argue for God because one of my students stopped believing in God (given he already had a weak faith) after learning about Evolution in school. God answers all who open their hearts and truely seek…

Mathew 7: 7-8
“Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.”

I just pray that God will open my student’s heart to see the Truth. If anyone can pray for him, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
I like the way there is symmetry in nature, particularly in plants and animals. I don’t believe that could have happened without God.

I think there is an element of enlightment here, I think it was the Holy Spirit whispering “Look at those trees, isn’t our God a mighty God” and when you are open to the Spirit, you hear the Spirits voice calling you to the truth, the reseach follows.

I would recomend reading “the origin of the species”. Alternatively, you could pick up any gradeschool level biology textbook. Sense there is a good answer to that question, does that mean that god doesn’t exist?

I agree … and here it is … straight from the horse’s mouth:

“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved*.” Origin of the Species*, 1872 (last edition before Darwin’s death).
 
luv4mary this is a good idea. It’s always enjoyable to hear conversion stories, especially from atheism. I tried searching the CA radio archives for more atheist conversion stories but couldn’t come up with anything. I also only found one article from This Rock. Maybe we should search the web and post a bunch of atheist conversion stories? It doesn’t look like too many posters here have done so.

Praise God for your conversion. There are many atheists that remain steeped in unbelief and it is always great to hear about a turn around. If we could have heard the rejoicing in heaven at the moment you had your change of heart, we would have been joyously defeaned by the sound.

Your testimony is a great example of how God’s grace works within us. Thanks for sharing.
