Converted Catholics, what denomination were you in before your conversion?

I concur with what @ajg posted. I would suggest that you talk with the priest at your earliest convenience. That way you can get started having your questions answered.

I wish you well on your journey.

Blessings

I would talk to him prior to marriage. If you decide that you wish to convert, and he knows your intentions, he may let you get married in the Church. It can help you see what the Church is all about, and it will save you from having to get your marriage blessed at a later date.

Sounds like you’re in the same position as me Bella. This is my first posting here as I too am looking into catholic teachings and so forth.
I was baptised as a JW but left for obvious reasons now and want to have a relationship with my Heavenly Father. I am currently going through a divorce due to the fact that my wife, also a JW, had repeated affairs and the relationship became quite abusive. I don’t even know if I will ever be free to remarry in God’s eyes. It has been a very long and lonely road but I am at least glad that I managed to get my children out of that ghastly JW cult.

I’d strongly encourage you who have left JW (or, really, any other religion) to watch some episodes of Marcus Grodi’s The Journey Home. They are broadcast on EWTN, but you can find past episodes on YouTube just by doing a search. There are several interviews of former JWs converting to the Catholic faith. It is really a fascinating series, as he interviews converts from all faiths and no faith.
Keep exploring, and know that you are welcome in the Church! The Church is an old and wise Mother: she’s seen it all, and no failings or past sins surprise her!

The poster is divorced so it is best to advise her to see a priest before she is married to discuss Catholic’s view about marriage.

@David1611

Welcome to CAF!

The offer I made to her goes to anyone searching for home. If you have any questions, please ask.

God Bless

I wasn’t raised in any religion. Live in the Bible Belt, most are Baptist. Growing up I remember being told by my mom that sort of thing “wasn’t meant for someone like me.” I still struggle finding the meaning behind that.

I was 20 and honestly severely depressed. I’d never went to church, read the Bible, didn’t even fully understand who Jesus was, but I did occasionally pray to God - despite not knowing what that meant. I had considered ending my life when a dear friend kind of came out of nowhere and invited me to church one night. There was adoration and I sat there, looked at Jesus, and I had no idea who He was or what any of this meant, but I wanted more. I think my heart was converted then. He was all I could think about. I spent many nights after that staying up and reading about/studying the Church and it only took a few months before I was intellectually won over as well.
God Bless you!

Teh Catholic Church turns no one away! But it is you who has to choose. Please come home to us and help make the Church great once again. The Church needs you!

Thank you so much! I will order those books on Amazon. I heard others talk about Rome Sweet Home. I just ordered a new Bible and started reading it. I appreciate the support. I keep wondering if I should wait to speak to a priest until I am married or just go now.
Go now, don’t wait to be married because that can cause more issues. If you are comfortable in telling us where you are maybe there is someone on thios board who is close to you and can help.

I’m a revert if that counts. Catholic, then Pentecostal, then Catholic again. Course we’re all Catholic when you get down to it. 😀

I will be praying for both you and Bella. I also ask everyone to keep these two in their prayers.

I didn’t convert from anything. I was baptized in a Methodist church, but was wasn’t taught about Christianity by my family. I think now this is why I suffered from a holy longing most of my life. I wanted to belong, but because of the disparate voices in Christianity, I couldn’t bring myself to. It’s a bit of a minor miracle that I’m Catholic.

Thank you. As JW’s we were taught to hate the Catholic Church more than anything else but a few years ago I came into contact with an elderly Catholic lady who was full of wisdom and discernment and she had a huge impact on my life. She bought me a Catholic bible and was very encouraging at a very difficult time when I was struggling with spiritual doubts and having problems in my marriage.
I was only ever baptised by the JW’s which, I would imagine, is not valid as they do not accept the divinity of Christ (among other things).
For years I could see that what cults such as ours were doing was effectively producing atheists as most are fully convinced that every other religion is evil so that there is nowhere else to go. With that in mind it is nice to see that a few others besides myself have retained some faith.

Very evangelical Methodist, and then very evangelical Presbyterian. I started listening to Fulton Sheen – not even his explicitly Catholic material at first – and I thought, “This is the greatest teaching I’ve ever heard, what must this man’s church be like?” So I looked at the Catechism, expecting a mix of good and bad – and realized that, wow, these people get EVERYTHING right.
