I’ve been Catholic for 17 years & recently became interested in Islam. I have 2 questions:
  1. Would it be wrong to practice Islam & pray the Azan 5 times daily if I am Catholic?
  2. Is it possible to be a muslim & a Catholic?
If I did convert to Islam & wanted to go back to the Catholic church, would I have to receive all the sacraments again?

Thanks–Asalaamu Ailaikum

Tahirah:)

You won’t have to. They will kill you before you do that! :rotfl:

Islam states that apostates are to be killed! So you better make up your mind before taking a **BIG **decision like joining Islam, the point of no return! 🙂
Is it possible to be a muslim & a Catholic?
Are you crazy? 😃

I think that this is the wrong forum for you to ask these kind of questions.

You should go here instead.

Why do you want to abandon our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ Who rose from the dead for a religion started by a pedophile? And any man who has sex with a 9 year old girl IS a pedophile.

If I may go question by question
  1. Would it be wrong to practice Islam & pray the Azan 5 times daily if I am Catholic?
Praying any prayers from another religion may be an issue. What exactly is said? There is no issue praying five times a day, or more. In fact we are told that we should pray constantly. When you say practice Islam, what would that entail?
  1. Is it possible to be a muslim & a Catholic?
No. To be Catholic, or even Christian, is to accept that Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity who chose to accept Human Form to Suffer, Die, and Rise Again that whoever believes in him might have eternal life. Islam denies this. The two are not and cannot be reconciled. Further, there are teachings about Christianity within the Qur’an that are so very wrong, the source of these statements is suspect.
If I did convert to Islam & wanted to go back to the Catholic church, would I have to receive all the sacraments again?
You would be required to go to confession and possibly a modified form of RCIA. You can only be baptised and comfirmed once, so you could not re-receive those. You would not be allowed Communion or any others while you are not a member of the Church. Choosing to leave the Church is a serious sin, and confession would be needed to get back into a state of grace.

I would like to ask why you feel drawn that direction. Where are you from? What is the pull? Feel free to pm if you do not want to discuss it on here.

  1. Is it possible to be a muslim & a Catholic?
If you have you read the Quran, you’d have found the answer: no. So what makes you interested unless you have at least studied their book? and why would you be converting back to Christianity? and why wiould you, as a Catholic, pray a prayer called Al Fatiha in which your Catholicism is called “misguidance”? are you basing your questions on actually having studied Islam?

Welcome to the Forum, Tahirah. 🙂

What has started your interest in Islam? Is it a simple curiosity? Do you have Muslim friends?

Remembering my own youth, I know that it took many years beyond my high school years to get beyond the simple practice of my Catholic faith to a deepening knowledge about it. So, perhaps it would be well for you to study further your own faith before converting to a religion that negates so much of what Christ teaches about Himself through His Catholic Church. This Forum and the articles found at the above links to the Library and This Rock magazine will offer you lots of help to grow in your Catholic Faith, so I hope you will make use of them.

Two posts and already a proselytizing attempt? This is so typical. Anyway, to give you the benefit of the doubt, it is possible to be a “catholic” (note: small “c”) and be a Muslim.
Pseudo-“catholics” (as some Anglicans like to call themselves “catholic”) like Rev. Ann Holmes Redding have no problem. Heck, even her bishop condones it! 🤷

I’m off to youtube to check if there are more posts on “former Catholic priest converts to Islam” rhetoric. Gotta love the Muslims for trying hard. 😉

I have had to study Islam with others before, I am pretty sure they deny that Christ is not hte son of god, but a regular prophet, and that Muhammad is a greater prophet, and that the Qu’ran is the real one, since its not been “hampered” with by humanity.

I’d say no, but thats me.

Yes, it would be wrong to practice Islam and pray the Azan 5 times daily if you are a Catholic. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours instead. You can pray it up to nine times a day.
  1. Is it possible to be a muslim & a Catholic?
No, Muslims and Catholics do not share the same beliefs about Christ. You are not a Christian if you believe what Islam teaches about Christ. You are not a Muslim if you believe what Christianity teaches about Christ. You can be one or the other or neither, but not both.
If I did convert to Islam & wanted to go back to the Catholic church, would I have to receive all the sacraments again?

Tahirah:)
If you did convert and decided to come back, you would want to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist, but you would not receive Baptism or Confirmation again, because those sacraments are only received once. But please don’t convert with the thought in mind that you can always come back, that’s not spiritually healthy.

I pray you remain Catholic, and that this interest you have in Islam is redirected into discovering what you don’t know about Catholicism. I pray also for the conversion of all of Islam. May the peace of Jesus Christ be always with you. ❤️

That would only happen in a Muslim country.

With all due respect, at the time Muhammad married a 9 year old, the culture of that time did not regard it as pedophilia (though in OUR culture, WE most certainly do regard it as such!)

Point of fact, she was 6 when they wed but it was not comsumated until she was 9. That was an accepted practice in that time and era, God only knows why.

He did it very publicly, and so it was bound to attract some nutcases to make threats.

I have known Muslims who converted to other religions (in the USA), and no one bothered them. A woman in my synagogue is a convert from Islam, and even her family did not threaten her (though they were not happy about it, that’s for sure!)

Welcome Tahirah to CAF,

Firstly, you don’t pray the Azan 5 times daily, you pray for Allah 5 times a day, “Azan” is nothing but a call and reminder for Muslims to perform prayer (aka Alsalat).

Secondly, Islam is not only about praying 5 times a day, that is only one of the five pillars of Islam, here are the five pillars:

1) Testimony of faith (Arabic: Alshahadah): "I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”.
أشهد أن لا إله إلاَّ الله و أشهد أن محمد رسول الله
2) Prayer (Arabic: Alsalat): praying five times a day in a timely manner.

3) Almsgiving (Arabic: Alzakah): similar to tithing in the Bible, but its around 2.5%.

4) Fasting (Arabic: Alsoum): completely refraining from any food or drink from dawn till sunset during one month in the lunar calendar (called Ramadan).

5) Pilgrimage to Mecca (Arabic: Alhajj): making a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia at least once in your lifetime, if you can afford it physically and financially.

Thirdly, in addition to the above five pillars, you have to follow what is written in Quran, and also follow Muhammad’s Sunnah (the way and lifestyle of Muhammad and his companions) as mentioned in Hadith books.

Tahirah, please ask yourself these questions:
  • Are you willing to worship Allah who said in Quran that Jesus was not crucified, that Jesus is not his Son, and Jesus is no more than a normal messenger?
  • Are you willing to testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, while Jesus in the Bible warned you of false prophets, and Jesus disciples warned you of false teachings that contradict Jesus ones, and Jesus himself said he is the first & last, the alpha & omega?
  • Are you willing to curse your fellow Jews & Christians when reciting the Quran during your Islamic prayers?
  • Are you willing to follow the Islamic law which contradicts everything in the Bible?
  • Are you willing to be a slave of Allah instead of Children of God?

I am very disappointed in the replies left regarding Islam. Why is everyone anti-Islam here? That proves no one has any respect for other religions which is not Christian like. Islam is a very peaceful religion, which most of you won’t accept. I’ve been reading articles on new muslims who have just converted from their old religion. They all feel a sense of peace in their souls. If someone chooses to explore different religions, they should be able to do so without being criticized or criticizing that particular religion. Why don’t all you Islam haters read up on Islam & quit being ignorant! If you don’t have anything nice to say than don’t say it!!

Thank you for that. 👍 Seems like you are the only sane person on these forums!!

I can understand why you were disappointed. So,u don’t need to listen to them if you don’t like their answers. Just ask your self why do you want to convert to Islam? Do you really understand about faith or you just look for religion?? It’s quite big different between faith and religion. And if you don’t mind, I may give you some advice, read the bible and catechism of the catholic church and the read the Quran and hadiths before you make any decision to convert. I think it’s fair enough. I will pray for you that you find the truth.
God bless
