I made this forum so that converts to the catholic church can say how they find the church. And converts from the church, why they left, what can be done, etc. I was born in a catholic family.

I was born and currently am Catholic. However, I would like to put in my two cents as I spent eight years away from the Church.

Reason for leaving: I didn’t want any rules placed on how I lived my life. I thought I could be a good person without God. College would be more fun uninhibited, etc.

Reason for coming home: I realized I was not actually that good and over the course of a few years searched for the Truth. In spite of myself, Christ found me and touched my heart. I would not have sacrificed comfort for a book of rules. I will sacrifice anything for Jesus Christ.

Hey,

Well, I’m not really a convert, I was born and raised catholic, baptized when I was a baby, recieved my first communion when I was 9 and confirmation when I was 13. I was away from the church because I didn’t understand the point of going to the church and honestly I felt nothing. But now I return to the church and never been so inspired and blessed.

When I was younger I went to the church, unispired by the priest’s homily and the people in the church. I felt like the homily was boring and the people didn’t seem to listen as well. So I thought what’s the point of going to the church? I learned nothing. I talked to my parents about this, but I still didn’t quite get the answer. When I left away for college, I never went to church anymore. I mean I still prayed, but never really went to mass.

One time, some friends asked me about my faith, and they somewhat challenged me, like trying to compare catholic with other denominations. I didn’t really know what to reply, and they bombarded me with their knowledge, even at one point telling me that my faith is not right. It didn’t really bother me at first, but then it creeped. I got frustrated because I didn’t know what to reply, and even though I was away from the church, it still pained me. So I started reading some articles on the internet, asked some guidance from priest, and re-learned things I’ve learned. Now that I learned something, I felt ready when they asked me the questions again. But knowing so much about theology, still made me empty. I started going back to church again, trying to soak in the scriptures, and little by little I started to understand. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge I know about theology when I’m far from God.

For me, faith has to come first. I doubted Jesus a lot before, thinking that why I have to suffer, why He never answered my prayers, I thought He got my back. I just couldn’t reason with Him. But after reading scriptures, going back to the church, getting involved with the community, and lots of praying and meditation, I realized that I was really wrong. I now see suffering as a blessing, for me to be a better person, and be closer to Him. Going to the church is no longer a burden, but a joy. There’s this peaceful feeling after I pray, and it’s a really really good feeling. I’m now going trough a break up with my bf of 8 years, and trust me it hurts alot. I asked friends and family for consolations, sometimes I was okay, sometimes I wasn’t. Not saying that my family and friends meant nothing, it’s just that I felt that God also very close to me. I feel his presence, never like before. Praying rosary really helped me too, it’s making me strong, teaching me to be patient, and to really trust Him. I’m just really grateful that I have my faith, my friends, and my family. 🙂
