Cooperating in clandestine drug production?

Hey everyone. I really need some insight in this. Ok, so here’s my situation: I live with some people who are growing pot in the house. I would love to move, and I’m working towards doing that as soon as possible, but I just don’t have that option right now. I try to stay out of their dealings with drugs and all the like as much as possible, but sometimes I forget where my boundaries are. For a while, they had a lamp on in the kitchen day and night as part of the growing process. One night I woke up and saw the lamp was off. I knew our cats would sometimes mess with stuff while they’re playing, I also knew that if the light gets turned off at a certain point in the growing process it effects the outcome. So, I went to my roommate and asked if he knew the light was off. I had no intention of becoming involved; I was tired, had just woken up, and it all clicked in my head so fast I didn’t really even think of the moral implications. My overall question is: was this a mortal sin? I’m going to confess it regardless, but I would like to know so I know whether or not to receive communion until I do.

You are living with people breaking major laws, and you are worried about whether telling your roommate the kitchen light was off is a sin? You have your priorities way out of order.

I hope you realize that the “it’s not my pot” excuse will mean exactly zilch to the arresting officer should your roommates’ little drug operation be discovered, and it’s just a matter of time.

You can be charged with a crime, and should move out immediately. Homeless shelter, parent’s house, crash at a friend’s place, etc-- move out. Pack up your stuff and GO.

Your other alternative would be to go to the police and tell them what is going on.

Get out of this situation ASAP. While I truly have no problem whatsoever with smoking marijuana, it is crazy to try to grow it, and it is also crazy to live where it is being grown. We’re talking about being arrested and hauled off to jail along with the actual gardeners simply because you live there.
Believe me, I’ve been there. The police will make no distinction between your roommates and you. Leave immediately.

Better you should move to a shelter than live in that house.

The light is the least of your problems. That you moved in and / or continue to live in that situation is the greater wrong you’re commiting.

Are you aware that by civil law (by your living in that building) you are cooporatively guilty of growing an illegal substance?

It’s a tough market out here for employment, businesses don’t hire people with illegal drug convictions on their arrest records.

Wake up.

Report it to the police. It’s your moral obligation. Smoking marijuana is a mortal sin and possession is illegal. You are in possession whether you know it or not.

Thanks for everyone’s advice. I think I made it sound worse than it is, even though it’s still pretty bad. It’s not anything large-scale, it’s actually hardly anything at all. I should have said my roommates are trying to grow pot in the house. Luckily their not too good ( I think they gave up on it actually), and I did talk to one of them about how I felt about it and he said he would talk to the other roommate about waiting until I moved IF they were to try it all again. If they do start again while I am here, I will make arrangements to leave.

At least they respect your position regarding having to grow the drug in the house. We are called to be witnesses in the most unlikely situation; though we may not condemn others unreasonably we still have to be firm with our belief. As Christians we are set apart to bring Christ into our midst and it’s not just words but action when needs be.

You must be in no way seem to endorse their action either by words of mouth or by your action.
