I recently learned that I am apparently working for a company that partnered in the past and I would guess either directly or indirectly continues to partner with a company that does research using a strain of cells (HEK 293) that was derived from an aborted fetus.

I work in the product development department so some of the materials I use to develop new products may have or still do benefit from this partnership/research.

I am not happy about this and do not approve the use of aborted cells for any purpose. I am now trying to determine what my cooperation in sin is. It seems this is sometime of mediate cooperation but I would like to determine if this is mortally sinful at a minimum.

What are your thoughts? Thanks.

A mortal sin requires full knowledge and consent. You didn’t know and you clearly don’t consent to the use of those cells.

My personal thoughts run along the lines of the field of cardiology. Most of what we know now about how the heart functions comes as a result of the work of Dr. Mengele in death camps. The practice has stopped, but the knowledge is still used to save the lives of millions. So long as the practice STOPS, continuing to use the knowledge isn’t wrong.

Now, if the company is still involved in using aborted children for research, personally, I’d look elsewhere for a job. That’s just me, I’m sure others have a lot to contribute as well. 🙂

I never heard anything about this until now. Do you have a source or link for that?

You know, it was something I was told in a college class by the prof when we were discussing ethics. I’ll do some research to see if I can find it backed up. Thanks for asking! 🙂

I know he also did work that studied heredity in twins as well as studies for surviving in cold. Sick, horrible, awful work…but knowledge did result. Doesn’t in any way justify it at all. Not even a little. But the debate we we’re having was if the knowledge should be discarded.

No, the issue is not the knowledge, but the ongoing use of living cells from an aborted human person. These human remains have become an object, a means, and a commodity which is exploited and sold for profit. I think this goes against the dignity of the person.

It sounds like you are not sure whether the partner company is still using the cell line or whether your company is using materials produced with the cell line. If not, then I don’t see your cooperation with the evil of the abortion which yielded the cell line. If at this time they are not producing materials with the cell line, I think you’re good.

Let’s review the three conditions for a sin to be mortal: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. Assess your situation accordingly. Perhaps meet with a priest to discuss it frankly.
