Coptic Christian priest killed in Egypt, setting off new protests by religious minority

More violence in Egypt against Copts, post-“peaceful revolution”…

This time in Assiut, a place where Copts often face violence. The priest’s name is not given in the link below, but I found from Coptic friends and Arabic news sources that his name was Fr. Daoud Butros. At first there was some speculation that it was a robbery, but now it is becoming more clear that it is Islamically-motivated, as it mentions in the story:

…] Neighbours reported seeing several masked men leaving the apartment and shouting “Allahu akbar,” or “God is great,” suggesting the killing was motivated by the divide between Egypt’s Muslims and its minority Coptic community.

Pray for the departed father, and for the monks and other workers who have been injured by the armed forces’ attacks on the monasteries of St. Bishoy and St. Macarios in the past few days (19 injured total). Things are still very turbulent in Egypt for the Copts.

I’ve been feeling very depressed and sad to what is going on in the Middle East lately (since Oct. 31, 2010). Why the continuing violence in the name of Islam? Why, why, why…

However, I went to church today and went to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Calmness overtook my being. There are some things way beyond our power or scope of natural reason. But God is always with us and will not abandon us.

• But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you. (1 Peter 3:15)*
