I’ve seen pictures of Coptic liturgies were the celebrant wears something very similar to the Latin Mitre, and others which look more like the Byzantine Mitre. I’m under the impression that Coptic bishops wear a Byzanine-style mitre, correct? Is the thing that looks like a Latin Mitre an option, or is in not a mitre at all, and worn by all priests? Or are the pictures getting mixed up, and the Latin-looking ones are worn by Coptic Catholics? Gaah…

Pope Shenouda III in Byazantine-style Mitre:

And something more like a Latin Mitre:

Whats going on here?🤷

I belive the miter-like hats you are asking about are not miters, but priestly hats. The Byzantine-style Miter is in fact a miter.

There are some references elsewhere that married priests wear these hats, while monastics wear their cowls, but I’m not positive about that.

Thanks. Thats what i thought, but i wanted to make sure.

The first picture is a Coptic style mitre not Byazantine because Byazanitine tradition came after Coptic, this is only worn by the pope and patriach.

The second picture does look a latin mitre but again Coptic tradition is older so therefore it is not latin. This is worn by priests

The third picture is just two priests greeting each other kissing their hands or asking for a blessing by touching their feet dw its an eastern thing 👍

In the third picture shows a priest without the mitre this is what monks wear but in black not white

Bishops wear the round thing shown in the first picture
