Does the Coptic Orthodox Church retain a valid ordination and communion? I’m wondering because I occasionally drive by one on my way home and wanted to know if I should be crossing myself as is appropriate when driving by a Catholic Church. If they have a valid Eucharist, then it’s still Jesus, even if they’re not in communion with His Church.

From what I understand, yes, the Catholic Church does recognize Oriental Orthodox as having valid sacraments.

Yes, they are considered valid by the Catholic Church. But do not attempt to receive Holy Communion at an Orthodox Divine Liturgy. That is not licit by THEIR standards (not the Catholic Church’s), and would cause a scandal if people know you to be not Orthodox.

Yeah, I would never try to receive communion there, though I assume it would be okay to go to adoration if they’re having it…

The main issue was just if I should be crossing myself in reverence for Christ’s presence. Since He’s there, I should. ^^

Yes; you’re correct. I wasn’t saying you’d want to receive- just offering the information, since my sister is Orthodox. 🙂

I’m pretty sure that Eucharistic adoration is something done only in the Latin church. If it’s happening in other churches I’d guess that it would be a “Latinization.” But definitely go to their vespers prayer service. Most Coptic Orthodox should have those on Saturday nights!
