The reason for copyrights is not just the financial protection of those who prepared authored the texts.
In the case of Mass parts, it is also meant as a guarantee for all of us that we are using the proper texts as promulgated by the Church.
People who bother to ask for permission to use copyrighted text are more likely to be concerned about making sure they are using the *correct *copyrighted text. I can’t remember if the ICEL is such an organization but I know that sometimes an organization that grants permission to print copyrighted materials in a worship aid will request that you send them a single copy of that worship aid for their records.
