The copyright law covers such questions. According to copyright law, it is all-right to copy part of a book or a magazine article for private study purposes–or in a school paper. If a book says it cannot be reproduced, this can only mean that some publisher cannot take a long passage or a larger portion of a publication and put it into another, their own publication. If you have been in a library lately, you may have seen photocopiers where many people copy magazine articles or parts of books. The law (the copyright law) allows this. If you would like to verify what I have said here, you could go into a library and ask a librarian if you can photocopy part of a book or a magazine article. A librarian would know because they even assist people doing such copying.
